Loads of rainfall heading up the Irish Sea now to top up Honister's 200mm+

Friends tell me the Brathay has burst it's banks already and roads around Ambleside are getting tricky

Another dry month here - just 25mm so far. On schedule still for my driest ever year (in 20) with just 420mm ytd. Worrying for spring if we don't get some very wet months soon. (Apologies to those currently in the NW!)

Honister has now hit 310mm+ in 30 hours.

The UK 48hr record of 405.0 mm in 48 hours is more than likely to be beaten

MetO highest yesterday 45mm at Otterbourne near Winchester. (yes, I know, softy southerners; this would just be a passing shower in the Lakes but roads and watercourses aren't built for it down here)

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 2.6 mm

Total since 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 1.2 mm (as at 8:40 am GMT (08:40 UTC) this morning on Friday 19 December 2025)

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 71.0 mm (94.8% of 1991-2020 December average)

Number of rain days during this month: 10 (76.5% of 1991-2020 December average)

Number of dry days during this month: 4

This means that at least another 4.0 mm of rain still needs to fall between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

However, only at least another 4 official rain days now need to be recorded between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

Seasonal Data

Total for this winter so far: 71.0 mm (34.0% of 1991-2020 winter average)

Number of rain days during this winter: 10 (27.0% of 1991-2020 winter average)

Number of dry days during this winter: 4

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 666.6 mm (85.0% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days during this year: 118 (85.9% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days during this year: 181

It's been over 11 days since I last posted on this thread and at that time, it had looked almost certain that this month would end up being wetter than average as we were only needing a tiny amount of rain at that time, to fall between then and the end of the month in order for that to happen. Yet ever since then, just the measly total of 2.4 mm of rain has fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank which has still not been enough for that target to be met. With little or no rain in the forecast for tomorrow and up until 09:00 UTC on New Year's Day, it now looks as this month is not going to be wetter than average here after all.

In addition to that, there has only been one further rain day at Edinburgh Gogarbank since that last post and this already means that we have now run out of time for getting a wetter than average month in terms of the number of rain days as there aren't enough days left in this month now to bring the number of rain days for this month up to the 1991-2020 December average.

All of this is showing us yet again, just how difficult it has been for us to actually get a wetter than average month this year with the wet November which we had  turning out to be just a mere blip in that regard and whatever happens tomorrow, this year will go down as our driest year since 2018. There continues to be very little in the way of rainfall in short to medium term model output and to me, that is very concerning indeed going into the new year, especially given the issues with water scarcity which have been around this year.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Monthly Data

Final total for December 2025: 73.6 mm (98.3% of 1991-2020 December average)

Number of rain days during December 2025: 11 (84.1% of 1991-2020 December average)

Number of dry days during December 2025: 11

Yet another below average month for rainfall both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and in terms of the number of rain days.

Seasonal Data

Total for this winter so far: 73.6 mm (35.2% of 1991-2020 winter average)

Number of rain days during this winter: 11 (29.7% of 1991-2020 winter average)

Number of dry days during this winter: 12

Annual Data

Final total for 2025: 669.2 mm (85.3% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days in 2025: 119 (86.6% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days in 2025: 188

2025 was a very dry year both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts and in terms of the number of rain days. That gave us quite a lot of concerns about drought and water scarcity and in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, it was our driest year since 2018.
