Well it's the final month of the year and there's all to play for - get your predictions in. Late penalties will absolutely apply so make sure you're on time!

My prediction is for a mildish one of 6.55c

2023 = 7.1c

2022 = 3.5c

2021 = 6.4c

2019 = 5.8c

Average 1991 -20 = 4.8c

Warmest all time = 9.6c (2015) - Second warmest was way below at 8.1c (1934)

Coldest this century = -0.7c (2010)  -  1981 was 0.1c

... I genuinely hope you are not living rough north of Cowbridge ... It's going to be too cold with an average December looking likely... 😉🥶

It's looking mild as per, but maybe a 20% chance of something significantly colder second half.

A very good chance of beating the warmest CET year though.

I would actually say that of all the months in the year December is going to be the hardest one to beat the warm record.

2015 was insane. With Jan, Feb and March by contrast - I am amazed the very old records are still standing. There has been a strange lack of very warm Januaries too recently while Dec and Feb have effortlessly delivered the mild...

I think mild first half, colder but not that cold second.

The fly is that there's persistent blocking to our north on repeated runs... but MO is keeping low pressure 'stuck' over us. If that block can ridge south, we're looking at colder air flushing over the UK, which would change everything.

Christmas is coming, the New Year approaches - it can only mean one thing... the final month of the CET competition!

Given the latest model output we've all probably gone too low but it's great to see such a big spread in the last month especially given how tight the top of the table is - it looks like the competition will go right down to the wire.

On a different note, thank you for all of the good wishes and festive cheer in the emails - it's much appreciated.

If anyone has a desire to run the CET competition next year then I'm very happy to hand it over but equally if there are no takers then I'm happy to carry on.

Merry Christmas and good luck everyone!

I didn't expect to be so far down the spread of estimates for this month, that's a bit of a shock!

I knew I was taking a risk though, as my lower estimate stems from a chance of some calmer, chillier weather in the final ~third of the month. Something the Met Office are now mentioning as a possibility but no more than that.
