"This weekend, active sunspot 4274 is directly facing Earth. With an unstable delta-class magnetic field, it poses a threat for powerful X-class solar flares. If such a flare does occur today, it will certainly be geoeffective."

MAJOR SOLAR FLARE AND EARTH-DIRECTED CME:ย

Today, the sun produced one of the strongest solar flares of the current solar cycle: An X5-class powerhouse. The explosion hurled a very fast CME toward Earth. This CME could scoop up one or two CMEs already in route, forming a potent "Cannibal CME." Its arrival on Nov. 12th could cause severe geomagnetic storms.

I really do hate this country's weather sometimes. The biggest kick in the nads is the cold(er) spell coming in this weekend. You can guarantee that as soon as the solar storm finishes, we'll get a run of clear nights then, just to rub salt in the wound. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

"Active sunspot 4274 erupted again today, producing a powerful X4-class solar flare. Unlike earlier explosions this week, this one was not squarely aimed at Earth. Even so, a CME is expected to deliver a glancing blow to our planet's magnetic field, and a geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for Nov. 16-17."

Behemoth sunspot?

"A potentially dangerous sunspot is emerging over the sun's southeastern limb. Yesterday, while it was still partially eclipsed by the edge of the sun, it produced an impulsive M6-class solar flare. The true value of the flare may have been X-class. This appears to be the same behemoth sunspot that Mars rover Perserverance saw from Jezero Crater last week. Now it is turning toward Earth. Strong geoeffective flares are increasingly likely as the sunspot lines up with our planet in the days ahead."

We were expecting an X-flare today, but this one surprised us anyway. At 0249 UTC, a previously overlooked sunspot exploded.

"NOAA forecasters say that G2-class geomanetic storms are possible later today when a rare combination of a CIR (co-rotating interaction region) and a CME (coronal mass ejection) hits Earth's magnetic field. The CME is of particular interest because it was launched by a powerful X2-class solar flare."

This was visible over much of the country about 5:30am

It could be rocket related or meteor skimming atmosphere?

There is sometimes a similar effect associated with Northern Lights called a steve I think - but not seen reports of those at same time.

Also they are not usually white
