We've already had to postpone our annual Alton Towers Scarefest trip from this Sunday cos of the appalling weather.

Pencilled in Friday 24th... nope, not as it stands. All models showing a horrible low. 

With the kids now older, it's much harder to coordinate when we can go. Might have to miss out completely - first time in about 12 years (even got to go in 2020!)

At least we can see the sun again and some real time temperatures as it been void of any real time temperatures outside and inside the conservatory which i wasn't able to record warm temps under weakening October sun strength, might be mid 20's if was sunny every day here.  

Rostherne hasn't recorded any sunshine for the past 7 days and only around 12 hours for the month to date.

Been rather a waste of an anticyclonic spell to be honest. Whatever happened to those bright & crisp autumnal days we used to get? I know at this time of year 'anticyclonc gloom' becomes more of a feature of our weather but not to this extent surely. And I'm sure that the daily forecasts over the past couple of weeks or so have been far more optimistic as to the break up of cloud and giving at least some sun than  what actually happened.

The south coast, at least IMBY, did get some beautiful sunny mornings or afternoons, although the cloud was always lurking not too far away.

I saw a couple of satellite photos during the last fortnight and both showed the cloud sheet closely matching the outline of England, and to a less good match, Scotland. I think this is quite likely with the strong inversion which accompanied the anticyclone.

Should the MetO provide weather warnings for cloud? At this time of year, I'm told, heavy cloud cover promotes Seasonal Affective Disorder, or serious depression in some people.

Of course we did....

58mm at Whitebarrow (SW Dartmoor) and a lovely 23mm here (NE Dartmoor). 10-20mm along the S coast.

All the data from 'roostweather' though navigating within a site with tonnes of data is not easy to explain or do....

The thing I find annoying is they keep forecasting significant rain here and showing it on the graphics but it just vanishes as it arrives as Darren says and the general area not getting it is several million people but never a mention in the forecasts as to why it didn't happen.

Yep, and the rain. 

It always hammers home just how unsettled a month (in this case more than a month) is, when you're in need of a period of dry and settled 

Yet as I write, the temperature here in Edinburgh as late as around 8pm GMT in the evening is still just above 15°C and that is almost back up to what we would typically expect to be seeing in the middle of summer at around this time.

Met Office anomaly maps kinda bear this out (although not as much as I thought they would)

MBY shows around 20-25 days where some rain fell, which is slightly above the 91-20 average. The drier days were towards the start of the month.

I think also, rain falling every weekend skews perception of the month, too.

Overall amount of rainfall was actually slightly down on average.

This weekend was supposed to be dry and chilly.

Instead, Sunday is a write-off and temps are horribly mild.

I know it been so wet but since the horrible gloom of October under HP i been seeing more sunshine this month than last month only 2 times was no sun but other days plenty under clearance times.  With cold and sunny air mass coming down mean the conservatory only can get to 18-20C range.

I agree - it feels distinctly warm here as well. 

You could have cut and pasted that from one year ago today!  Sadly we know how it played out after that. 

Yes I'm not convinced. 

I was looking through my pics/vids and saw several from last January with snow on the ground. I read through the January Snow Reports thread to remind me of the details, and most regions had lying snow, many for 7-10 days. Amount of snow did vary greatly, though, and there were no shortage of places that had none lying.

Feb was then persistently cold - although was murky and dull so no frosts. And this on top of most areas getting snow in the November.

Far from being in the 'modern classic' category, but we've had way crappier winters

Wont happen at all!  Unless there is a nuclear war or supervolcanic eruption, or asteroid strike.  Though most of us will be dead before the snow arrives! LOL

They started to appear in early October here - I swear they're getting earlier every year.
