After our wet 48hrs (53mm in Edinburgh) we are on the north side of the boundary so clearer with a cold NE wind and 4 C

Most of Scotland north of the Central Belt went subzero last night and there's snow on the ground in parts of the north (photo of it in Lossiemouth on BBC news this morning)

Here in Edinburgh, there are still a number of showers continuing to be blown in here from off the North Sea at times with some of these showers also turning out to be rather heavy although there are also some decent sunshine in between these showers at times as well. It's just a pity that it's not cold enough here for these showers to be falling as snow and so, this is turning out to be rather a waste just now of what might otherwise have been a decent easterly here.

Currently around 7°C which is actually slightly milder than around this time yesterday although it still feels really cold in that wind.

Yes John, just driven back from Melrose, blue sky, cold NE wind and plenty of small showers. Drove through one with small hail at Lauder. Car temperature gauge between 6 and 7 C

Another couple of weeks further on and it would be one of our snow shower classics!

Incidently, coming down the A68 to the Edinburgh by-pass I could see a wee dusting of snow on Ben Ledi

Not too much drama at this end with overcast skies and calm air with a mere 3 mm so far today keeping the dampness going. Even feels humid at 15.4 C.

8.3c currently. Heavy, driving rain all day with a strong North Easterly. OK, it's not snow or cold but it's a proper winter's day. Love it!

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was 7.8°C.

Here in Edinburgh, we can have two types of North Sea effect. We have the one on summer which causes us to get haar, low cloud and/or cooler temperatures at a time when it might be hot and sunny further in land.

In the winter months, there is the other North Sea effect which results in milder weather and possibly rain here whilst it's colder elsewhere, perhaps with some snow.

At the moment we're pretty much experiencing that winter North Sea effect. There's no snow anywhere near here but we do have a stiff wind from off the North Sea with gusts up to around 43 mph from the east at Edinburgh Gogarbank, and that is also continuing to bring in some fairly frequent showers.

As a result, the temperatures here in Edinburgh are refusing to drop, and remain stuck at around 7°C.

It was foggy here too first thing (i.e. 4  AM), but it's now partly cloudy and calm. 10.4, dew 9.9, following a low of 9.6 and a high yesterday of 14.1. There was 4.8mm of rain in the end yesterday, a soggy day with light rain on and off throughout but nowhere near as much as received further north!

Last night's showers have now died away and it's not as windy as it was yesterday but that wind is still coming in from off the North Sea and there is still a lot of cloud around, albeit with some clear breaks as well.

As a result, the temperature during last night has not dropped one single bit and continues to be stuck at around 7°C here in Edinburgh (where it has been all night) which isn't even the least bit cold for this time of the year (I've even seen Atlantic westerlies or even SWs deliver colder nights than this to these parts at this time of the year).

Clearly, that is the North Sea Effect in place here. Absolutely pathetic!!😡
