Well, well, well - after a slow start (all of 1.2mm overnight), today has been a very wet day, with 19.4mm so far - a round 20mm over the past 24 hours.

Here's the 12-hour accumulated rain total via the NW radar. You can see that the far SE has, for once, had a good soaking. The ground is still hard, though, with maybe 1mm of wet soil at the very top!

After 12.2mm yesterday another 14.6mm has fallen today making it 41.8mm for the month so far. Finally over the 450 YTD, last year we were over 800mm by now and not much less in 2023.

Drought n a fair way to being over IMBY. 29mm at Otterbourne on Sunday, so probably 20+mm here, and yesterday Wiggonholt (just the other side of the Downs) added 35mm - and there's more heavy rain forecast for Wed/Thu night.

The more local Southern Water measuring station at Chilgrove reports totals of 18mm for Sunday (reasonable) but 1020mm yesterday (some mistake there? 😮)

Up to 68mm now. A big difference in the models this morning with the ECM having the rain south of here on Thursday with the GFS giving us a soaking.

We're still in a hosepipe ban - not that I'll be needing one - and the reservoirs are still well below average so I'm happy for the GFS to be right this time.

Well I did at last manage to line up with some moderate showers Monday but still only managed 9.9mm for the whole of Monday, which was nevertheless my third wettest 9 till 9 day since February! Very similar figures at stations close by but didn't have to go far to get higher figures. Even Retron got double that so I think I safely qualify as being the driest part of the UK!

I suspect tonight and tomorrow will beat that though hopefully.

You would expect everywhere to be a quagmire with that much but the ground is still solid.

Just passed the 100mm mark here - 101mm so far, 19.6mm of it today. The heavy rain at the core of the front "wiggled" as it crossed Sheppey, meaning we got a larger dose of rain than we'd otherwise have had.

Meanwhile some guy in a Porsche decided to crash into two other cars in the rain on the main bridge off of Sheppey, meaning the western end of the Isle is gridlocked tonight!

EDIT: The annual rainfall is now 404mm, so a quarter of the year's rain has fallen in October.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 9 am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning: 3.6 mm

Monthly Data

Final Total for October 2025: 53.6 mm (64.8% of 1991-2020 October average)

Number of rain days during October 2025: 12 (92.3% of 1991-2020 October average)

Number of dry days during October 2025: 15

There are some months in the year (such as April) in which the total for October 2025 would have given us a wetter than average month, but October itself isn't such a month. According to the 1991-2020 averages, October should be our wettest month on average and the total for October 2025 doesn't even come close to reaching the 1991-2020 October average. As a result, October 2025 is yet another substantially drier than average month and it now seems as though we just get wetter than average months here any more.

Seasonal Data (as at 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) on Saturday 1 November 2025)

Total for this autumn so far: 99.8 mm (47.2% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of rain days during this autumn: 24 (65.9% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of dry days during this autumn: 29

Annual Data (as at 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) on Saturday 1 November 2025)

Total for this year so far: 461.8 mm (58.9% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days during this year: 88 (64.0% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days during this year: 168
