Meanwhile back on topic and after a few relatively dull days and all of the interesting weather which was brought about by Storm Amy, normal service for this year has now been resumed here with the return of the usual sunshine.

Yesterday was our coolest day of this autumn so far with a maximum temperature of 12.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and I'm hoping that it won't even be too long before we get our first single figures maximums of the season as we are coming into the time of year now when we would typically expect to start seeing that.

However, last night was a night in which despite the much fresher air mass, the temperatures generally refused to drop and so last night's overnight minimum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was only down to 9.7°C.

Furthermore, the next few days are expected to warm up a bit once again starting from today but as I write, the temperature is currently around 12°C here in Edinburgh.

This morning's sunny start didn't last for all that long as it then clouded over once again from the latter part of the morning onwards.

In the end, a total of only 3.8 hours of sunshine was recorded for today so far but although that isn't all that much, this was still enough for today to go down as our sunniest day of this month so far, thus showing us how much of a dull start to this month we've been happening, especially in comparison with what the rest of this year has been like.

We're still only in the first week of this month as I write and yet, we've already had just over half of our 1991-2020 autumn average sunshine during this autumn so far. In addition to that, only at least another 15.1 hours of sunshine now needs to be recorded between now and the end of the year in order for this year to go down as being sunnier than average and there are still almost three months left of this year including this month as the end of the year isn't until sunset on New Year's Eve (for the purpose of reporting hours of sunshine, the official observation day runs from sunrise to sunset and doesn't follow the usual official observation day that runs from 09:00 UTC on one day to the exact same time on the next day).

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was 14.0°C so today wasn't actually quite as warm as it was forecast to and it's not very often that this happens here these days.

However, the temperatures are once again generally refusing to drop and so, the temperature as I write is still around 13°C here in Edinburgh.

Last night was yet another night in which the temperatures once again refused to drop.

As a result, the 6z raw BUFR/SYNOP data shows the minimum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank to be 12.2°C but since the official observation day runs from 09:00 UTC on one day to 09:00 UTC on the next day, yesterday's official minimum at Edinburgh Gogarbank was actually 11.7°C as recorded yesterday morning.

There is still some cloud around and it's still rather breezy but there has also been some decent sunny spells around to start off today.

With that, the temperature here in Edinburgh is already at around 15°C (so not even any need to wear any jumpers whilst out and about today) which already makes today warmer than yesterday.

A stunning day. Early cloud cleared to leave flawless deep blue skies, a gentle breeze stirred the leaves and the sun shone down with that gentle warmth that's so redolent of autumn.

It's presently 19.9, dew 14.0, following a high of 21.4 earlier.

I've uploaded a picture of my garden to TWO's server, so it should appear larger than normal!

Been a glorious day with near unbroken sunshine the whole day, even got slightly sunburnt again while on a bike ride. Peaked at 19.6 C at 3 pm.

Seems this Summer isn't quite done with us just yet. Longer this eats into Autumn, the better.

A mostly grey day, but reasonably bright and dry, with a light wind. However, it's been warm enough [17°C] to mow in shirtsleeves and give the local RAF memorial* [link below] a bit of a sweep/clean.

I'm thinking the seeing will be poor for moon-watching tonight.

Another mostly cloudy day here in Edinburgh

Throughout this year, I have been talking a lot about this year being the year in which just wouldn't stop shining and that is nicely shown by the fact that only at least another 12.0 hours of sunshine need to be recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and sunset on New Year's Eve in order for this year to go down as being sunnier than average.

However, the Sun's not really been shining during this month up until now. We are now roughly a quarter of the way through the month and given that the days are still rapidly shortening, we should have had more than a quarter of our 1991-2020 October sunshine by now.

Yet, this month has mustered up a total of just 8.5 hours of sunshine at Edinburgh Gogarbank so far which is only 9.0% of the 1991-2020 October average with 2 completely sunless days having already been recorded as well, so this is turning out to be a very dull month here overall up until now which is in complete contrast to what this year has been like until now.

Today is a bit cooler than of late as well, at around 12°C here in Edinburgh
