Taken over the UK as a whole, 3rd October 2020 was the wettest day in the UK since records were started in 1891 according to the Met Office with an average rainfall of 31.7mm.

This was Storm Alex which made landfall in NW France on 1st October and then moved slowly northwards over the UK during the next 4 days.

The maps below show the rainfall distribution for the 3rd October and for the period 1st-4th October in total

There were numerous reports of flooding across the UK but the situation in the Mediterranean region of France was much more severe with the worst floods for many decades in some areas and 16 fatalities as the presence of Alex drew in strong moist south-easterly winds to that area
