Last night was our coldest night of the autumn so far with an minimum temperature of 4.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank although it was still not yet quite cold enough to give us our first ground frost of the season.

Last night started off on a cloudy and overcast note, but it didn't take long for the skies to clear after that. This has been a year in which the Sun just will not stop shining and we are back to the usual sunny skies this morning as well.

Happy Autumn Equinox everyone.

Last night was incredibly cold here for this early in the season as the overnight minimum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank dropped all the way down to -0.3°C to give us the first official air frost of the season at Edinburgh Gogarbank and Edinburgh Airport which is quite remarkable when you consider that up until now, we hadn't even had as much as a ground frost here this autumn.

I know that we can get an air frost in September and that is something which has happened in recent years, but I wouldn't normally expect to be seeing that until some time in October so this is something which has actually happened quite early this year. That in itself is remarkable given the ongoing climate change and given how hot it was for so much of the time during the summer. What this does mean though is that if were now to get a spell of summer-like weather such as what we've been seeing a lot of this year, that would now officially go down as an Indian summer as a result of us having that early frost.

In addition to that, this has now led us into the usual bright and sunny morning once again in this year in which the Sun just won't stop shining.

I wouldn't worry about that as the more reports on here about that, the better (and thanks for the link as well).

In the vast majority of the time, It will normally be Jerry who posts those reports from your area of Edinburgh (except that he is currently sunning himself in Portugal as I write) and sometimes, he will post something which I'm about to post myself and even beat me to that, but that never stops me from posting what I'm about to report anyway.

On the subject of this morning's air frost though, I will add that this is the polar opposite of us getting our first 20+°C maximum in the spring. In recent years, we have often had to wait until the end of May or even the start of the actual summer itself though before we have got that although this year ended up being quite a notable exception to that particular pattern and even with that, our first 20+°C maximum of this year didn't happen until April.

Yet, we have usually always been getting our first air frost of the season in October and sometimes even as early as September as has been the case on this occasion and given the current ongoing era of climate change and our warming planet, that is very remarkable indeed.

Yes I'm still in the Algarve gang and very interested to see Edinburgh's first air frost recorded. It's going to be a shock coming back at the weekend. I see that it's still dry up there with only 36.8mm so far at Swanston (compared to well over 200mm in parts of the western Dales and Lakes!)

Here, it's turned slightly cooler. We've gone from day maximums of  30 C+ to 26 C - 28 C

Still no rain for the 27 days I've been here and barely any cloud.......a wonderful climate, no wonder it's such a cheerful laid back country!

Wow!! 27 days without rain is a lot and yet, I'll bet you that there aren't the same concerns about water scarcity over there even with that as there is here just now.

In addition to that, we had quite a lot of hot weather during the summer (more so than last year) with that even starting in the spring but even with that, there were no 30+°C maximums here other than on one day when the temperature did reach 30°C at Swanston which was strange as Swanston didn't have the official heatwave which was recorded at the time, at Gogarbank.

I will say though that due to there being too much cloud around around earlier on last night, there was no air frost on this occasion so last night wasn't as cold as the previous night.

However, last night was still rather chilly as the temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank dropped to 4.3°C with a ground frost still being recorded there.

This means that today is once again getting off to yet another bright and sunny start in this year in which the Sun just won't stop shining.

Meanwhile, the temperature here in Edinburgh is currently around 4°C, so it's still possible that what I've reported here as the overnight minimum temperature might not actually end up being the final value for that in the end.

Yes - it's the first night on the season I've considered putting on the duvet!

2nd day in a row with the overnight low being 2.6c, up to 15.1c now and mostly sunny although some high level cloud cover

Dare I say it, if only it is late January/early February but probably still be cold rain given today's warming trend (yes, I do think it is a thing).
