Although August in particular was exceptionally dry here, we are now into a more unsettled spell of weather and although we're still not yet probably getting anywhere enough rain to ease the ongoing water scarcity crisis, we are at least getting some rain now which wasn't even the case not all that long ago. As a result of the dry weather, the grass had turned yellow/brown but the rainfall over the last few days has at least helped to turn the grass that bit greener once again.

The latest model output has the foreseeable future as being wetter than average which is complete change from what we've been seeing but there are no real signals for a wetter than average autumn overall, so the current unsettled spell might not be enough to completely eradicate the water scarcity crisis in the longer term, although it will hopefully help with that a little bit in the shorter term. This should also result in this thread being that bit busier than of late, and back to just busy it normally is.

Regardless of the situation in your area as regards to rainfall, this is the very place to post those all important totals for this month although last month's thread is still available for anyone to post their final totals for August.

Off to a flying start here. A line of prolonged very heavy showers just passing through with more to come from the south west by the look of it. Drought has well and truly ended here. The garden and surrounding fields are looking fresh and green again

Already a soggy start to this meteorological season where 18 mm has fallen this morning, that's on top of 2.2 mm yesterday. All much to the delight of my beloved lawn where it is already greening up, it was literally like a dust bowl only 3 days ago. 

Wonder how long it'll be before I get sick of the mere mention of rain? 🤣

Seasonal start to Autumn 

To be honest this makes a welcome change to the unsettled Augusts we usually have followed by the early September heatwave once summer holidays end.

We have had heavy rain on and off for two/three days but more in the form of showers.

As much as I do not like the rain - I think we needed it, so in a way this is a perfect start to Autumn - the weather turned literally on first day of Autumn.

Up and running for the month with 5mm so far. 

It will take a lot more than that to ease drought conditions here though. Many reservoirs around here are less than 50% capacity at the moment.  

At long last there's been a decent soaking today - 11.8mm, in two main batches. The ground is still rock-hard, but the lawn is a shade greener already. It's too late for some of the trees, though, and some of the smaller branches on the hazel, for example, are now stripped bare of leaves. 

There's been more rain today than in the previous 5½ weeks combined!

Had a round of squally rain this morning that gave me 5.2 mm in just a few minutes.

It was absolutely hammering down at work in Castleford this afternoon but we only had 3mm here in Tinshill so must've missed the very heavy showers. Up to 8mm so far. 

This morning there was a marked band of heavy rain crossing the south - and it came down in sheets, blown in by a gusty wind as it crossed here. The peak rainfall rate was just over 70mm/hour, and the roar it made as it battered the leaves of the trees was quite remarkable. 

There were a few areas showing over 200mm/hour on the radar nearby, whether that was actually hail or rain I couldn't say!

Since midnight we have accumulated a further 35 mm from torrential downpours particularly around 6 to 7.30 am . Month to date has now exceeded 100mm

Update: Just had a couple of flashes and now approaching the 1 inch mark (27 mm).
