Got 4.8mm overnight which at least filled the water butts. I have a moisture meter and so the top 1cm of soil was moist but below that still bone dry as you would expect. Going to take a 100mm+ from now to get to the roots of stuff.

Extreme heat in the conservatory and hottest day of the year so far at 44.3C and living room was 34.3C while rest is 30 to 32C.  Expecting same levels Tom and slightly less on Monday follow by large drop to 30s and house temps mid 20s so will be pleasant. 

I love sunny and warm/hot in summer and am prepared to suffer the hot nights for it.

But getting the odd cooler respite with a bit of rain to freshen things up is a beautiful thing.

I think the rain is going to arrive here in the next hour or so, it surely can't miss this time, looking at the radar.

A not very pleasant day other than it was relatively cool. But of no use because hardly any sun just thick grey cloud which produced .... ermm, zero rain. Very windy as well so about the worst of all worlds really.

I'd say quite the opposite. Today I was able to mow the lawn (well, the half of it which still grows), lop some branches off an overgrown dog rose, take my dog to the beach for the first time, then to a country park, all of which was aided by the fact it wasn't 26+ degrees, humid as hell or with sun that makes you go red within 10 minutes unless you wear oily gloopy sunblock (which then drips in your eyes due to sweat).

And to cap it off it's a pleasant enough 22 or 23 indoors, so no need for any air con tonight.

More days like today, please!

I don't know about anyone else but I am absolutely loving this period of summer weather. Its dry, warm (maxes of 22c daily here) and with light winds and good sunny spells. Perfect summer.

Not too hot nor to cold - true goldilocks weather 

This morning is probably one of the finest mornings i've experienced in a long time. 

I took the dog for his walk up on Ashdown Forest @ 7am. The air was fresh and cool, humidity was low, visibility excellent, and the sun was shining low and bright through the dew making the whole landscape feel alive. For the first time in a while i got lost in life affirming thoughts as the world did not immediately feel like a confusing, damaged and oppressive place. 

I don't enjoy the extreme heat and high humidity, my day to day active life, the home i live in, and the industry i work in is largely incompatible with such oppressive and alien weather, so i agree with Scilly, its bloody lovely. 

I'm just hanging on, patiently, knowing each humid day is one day closer to experiencing crisp air, nights which go below the teens and so forth. Only a few more weeks to go!

To be fair it is still quite humid (90RH), but today didn't feel as such on account of lower temps and the gentle NE breeze. 

Given the forecast for this week, taking us into September*, we had a 'last hoorah!' day out yesterday on the beach in Anglesey.

Stunning day. The surf was up, too, so was good fun having a swim.

* yes, I know September can have some amazing summer weather

I always feel a wave of sadness when we get to the end of summer. I find I'm less and less interest with winter with each passing year, and I really just don't look forward to darkness, scraping the car and rolling out of bed on a cold day.

That said, I can't complain at this summer. The combined spring and summer season has been remarkable, even up here in North West England. May was probably the best month of the whole period, just for it's sunshine and dryness, whilst August has been the best month of the meteorological summer. It's definitely up there with August 2022 as one of the best Augusts of this century so far.

This has been one of the best Spring/Summers i can remember over the last 50 years (purely for selfish reasons of course)

Not one game of cricket cancelled all season and not played a single round of golf in the rain.

Happy to have a stormy, wet and windy Autumn and a cold, snowy winter if over 4 months of warm and dry weather is the payoff.

My sadness is seeing the last 40C temps in the conservatory on 25th August as it was reached 40.1C and lasted for nearly 30mins solid under the late August sun strength. Sadness came when 40c figure gone when dropped knowing won’t see this in September since no heatwave forecast to allow to reach again. At least this current unsettled weather contain lot of sunshine to keep my home mid 20s and low 30s from conservatory like today 32C after a passing heavy shower. 

It's been a great summer though if you like being outside making a racket with crappy music or shouting, or stinking out the street with BBQs. 

Surely it's not too much to ask of summer to have some rain once a week or so? Last summer was the first in a while where things stayed lush and green throughout - wonderful, like summers used to be. Sadly that was just a flash in the pan, and it seems "scorched earth" is our summer norm these days!

We had a crud summer 30 years ago, of course, and that led to a wonderful winter. It's now been 5 years since I've seen a covering of snow here and I'm not expecting to see any this year either - I'd be delighted if I was wrong though! Unlike summer fans, who are guaranteed heat and sun every year, even if briefly, us winter fans in the SE are in a dire place.

We need very warm October that we not seen for long time now that often led to colder winters.  Hope we see one this year.

Saw a few clips on Twitter recently of early turning of leaves in southern England due to the lack of moisture this summer. 

Some spits and spots of showery rain here the last couple of days, but never amounting to very much in the end, but despite the cooler feel in the air recently, temps still manage to remain above average. No way out of that now. 

We had overnight rain Monday into Tuesday, then a couple of downpours on Tuesday.

Yes, our climate is changing almost before our eyes and people seem mostly oblivious to the implications.  Large swathes of the country have a water shortage, crop yields are down, the natural world has responded.

Thought I'd bump and use this thread for a very IMBY look at the summer (stats wise anyway).

So overall a noticeably hotter summer in 2025 than 2024 and amusingly a wetter one too, according to my WS anyway. Figures below with 24 in brackets:-

June = 17.8c (15.2c) and 33.78mm (30.74mm)

July = 18.6c (17.1) and 119.63mm (67.06mm)

August = 17.4c (17.8c) and 24.38mm (50.78mm) 

Top temperature was 34.9c in July versus last year's 32.3c in August. (Sensor has the usual standard screening so suspect a touch of an over report but gives a decent enough idea). 

Rainfall amounts did vary from my WS to a very close one on Wunderground, but then that one frequently said it was dry when it definitely wasn't so I'm inclined to go with my stats as being fairly accurate at least and I do occasionally sense check with stations round the area and figures weren't out of step.  

The rainfall was obviously concentrated in July and a lot of that fell in 3 or so batches and as the backdrop was a dry end to Winter and a very dry Spring, it was one of those dusty summers and I suspect if you look at number of days with rain it would be significantly lower in 2025 than 2024. 

Personally, I found it unpleasantly hot throughout, with an annoying amount of 3-5 day bursts of high heat and once early June was done with the nights were often in the uncomfortable range and not cool enough to allow me to get the indoor temps lower than 21-22c (25c ish during the hotter spells).

Other's no doubt found things more to their liking than I did! 

Will be interesting to see where Autumn goes and whether it continues the warm/hot theme.

Conclusion

The summer of 2025 was substantially warmer than average with every month being warmer than average. Every month had a notable hot period within it, although our only actual official heatwave occurred in August.

The summer of 2025 started on a slightly wetter than average note but even that month had a below average number of rain days. The summer then become progressively drier with August being exceptionally dry. As a result, the summer of 2025 was drier than average overall.

The summer of 2025 was also sunnier than average overall with July being the only duller than average month despite it being the only month in which there weren't any completely sunless days.

In the end, the ongoing lack of rainfall went on to cause a number issues regarding water scarcity but in judging any summer, that has to be taken out of the equation as every summer has to be judged in terms of what generally makes up a decent summer. For that, it needs to be warmer than average, drier than average and sunnier than average. It was a summer which passed all of those tests with flying colours and that leaves me with no alternative other than to give it 8 out of 10 with the only marks coming off for there being no 30+°C maximums (although one was recorded at Swanston in the south of Edinburgh) and the fact that it wasn't actually as sunny overall as the preceding spring.
