I suspect we may begin to see a squall develop on the back edge, its fairly undefined just now, but weve just had a downpour coupled with a few heft gusts as the backedge moved through... fairly benign by squall standards, but this might develop further as it moves further in land....

I see that South Uist has now recorded a gust of around 80 mph and Aonach Mor (high altitude) has recorded 106 mph.

Just been out to the shops for some groceries... as much as its not that crazy a windy event here, for August with all the trees in full leaf it looks exceptional.

Gusts are around 30-40 here, and whilst that is a normal day for winter, right now, visually it looks extremely chaotic across the woods and playing fields.

Quite fun to watch actually, the trees seem to be absorbing the blows quite comfortably from what Ive seen.

In the past hour there have been gusts to 77 mph to the south of here at Inverbervie and 79 mph up to the NW at Kinloss. Remarkable for early August.

Latest observation from Cairngorm summit (if correct) showing a gust of 116 knots / 134 mph!

Still gusting between 55-60 here. Wind has veered slightly to the W and the gusts are becoming more frequent. The biggest trees are looking quite dramatic now as they are tossed around.....lots of leaves and small branches down so far

Definitely a very noteworthy event for those north of the border, particularly the northern half of Scotland.

As a comparison, the Fastnet storm on 14 August 1979 saw a gust of 75mph at Milford Haven according to the met office.

Wikipedia reported wind speeds of 70mph off the south coast where the disaster took place.

Also todays storm was well forecast which didn't appear to be the case 46 years ago.

It’s still a bit breezy here today but nothing like yesterday’s storm thankfully. There are still a number of train services cancelled, a large number of trees down and quite a few power outages across the north of Scotland.
