New thread opened a little early for those who get up betimes on Sunday mornings.

It's nearly the 13th as I post this and temperatures are hovering around 20C.

14°C here, but the Sun has started to warm us up. The lawn looks like a desert! I see rain is being mentioned for next week, Tuesday perhaps the main candidate, but not much else unless we catch a decent thunderstorm.

I woke to see condensation on the outside of my window, which was odd: since then the blue sky has filled with cloud, and for that I'm grateful - anything that keeps that searing sun away for even an hour or two is most welcome by me! (Despite being over 3 weeks away from the solstice, the sun's only one and a half degrees below where it was then... you wouldn't even notice that).

Currently it's cloudy, 16.4, dew 15.6. The low was 13.4 and yesterday's high was an average 23.4.

Looks like I chose a good spot to experience the heat in Dent in the Yorkshire Dales National Park (although the village is in Cumbria)

Not a cloud since we got here Friday. 27 C on Friday and 29 C yesterday. I'm expecting 26 C today. A bit hot for walking and we are being bitten by horseflies (clegs) but I'm glad to experience a bit of heat for a change 😁

No heatwave back in Edinburgh 🙄

Last night's overnight minimum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank was 13.0°C.

I said yesterday that the easterly muck would probably roll right in here during the night once it has the chance to do so and that is exactly what has happened as this morning has started off on a dull and foggy note with even a little bit of dampness first thing this morning.

In this year in which the Sun just won't stop shining, I'm still convinced that the Sun will break through at some point during today but today is clearly not going to be as sunny as other recent days even if that happens.

Currently around 14°C here in Edinburgh

I've been absolutely sweltering in this little flat over the last few days to the point where I've even been starting to not feel all that well as a result, so it's a great relief for me for it to now be that bit cooler today.

16C earlier but now 19.8C, clear light airs and blue sky. The Met Office and BBC mention rain for me this week.

Maybe this time?

As expected, the Sun has already broken through here in NW Edinburgh with a temperature of around 18°C here in Edinburgh.

Yesterday, we were already above 21°C here in Edinburgh by that same time but that is only a 3°C difference and if we could somehow lose that breeze from off the North Sea, it would still not be outwith the realms of possibility for Edinburgh to still get its official heatwave after all with a late temperature rise, especially given that the Sun is very strong at this time of the year which actually makes that possible.

I'm not expecting that to happen but forecasts can be wrong and you just never know what might end up actually happening.

Meanwhile, I can confirm that the Scottish Borders has already had an official heatwave which actually started on Thursday. From that day onwards, the official maximum temperatures at Charterhall (which is the nearest official Met Office station to where my family live in Hawick) over the last three days were 26.2°C on Thursday, 26.0°C on Friday and 27.0°C during yesterday. This means that an official heatwave was recorded there yesterday and if today's temperatures also meet that same threshold, that heatwave will then have gone into a fourth day.

For Hawick, today's Met Office forecast is going for a maximum of around 25°C for today which keep that heatwave going for another day if that comes off and as I write, the temperature at Charterhall is currently already at 19.5°C. Since I will be travelling down to Hawick tomorrow, you will see me reporting on the conditions down there quite a lot in the next couple of weeks although it's just a shame that this lovely spell of weather is likely to already be over by then with tomorrow's forecast already looking a lot more unsettled.

Cool night down to 14C then cloud rolled in giving pleasant cool start. Sun breaking through now and temperature risen to 21.3C. With the lack of yesterday's cooling sea breeze so far I can see it eventually rising above yesterday's 25.4C max.

Temperature now up to 21.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 21.6°C at Swanston. This means that for an official heatwave to be recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank, the temperature needs to rise by at least another 3.6°C by 10am BST (09:00 UTC) tomorrow morning, the end of the current observation day. For an official heatwave to be recorded at Swanston, the temperature only needs to rise by at least another 3.4°C by that same time.

Although the easterly muck from earlier on has cleared away though, there is now some high to medium level cloud around as well as that breeze from off the North Sea. This means that even without that easterly muck, today would still not have been as sunny as other recent days here anyway.

It was that same type of cloud cover which stopped Thursday's temperature threshold from meeting the criteria for an official heatwave (otherwise, that would have been officially recorded yesterday) and it looks as though this might also be what scuppers our chances of an official heatwave being recorded for here today.

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank is officially confirmed as 23.8°C which is actually a bit cooler than on other recent days. This confirms that there will be no official heatwave here in Edinburgh with this latest spell of weather which hasn't even given us our hottest day of the year out of it even though we are currently in the warmest month of the year on average according to the 1991-2020 averages.

A wind from off the North Sea, some easterly muck and some other cloud cover at times when that easterly muck wasn't around have all played their part in that outcome but today's highest temperature was higher than the official Met Office forecasts for here and in the end, we weren't all that far away from an official heatwave being recorded here in Edinburgh.

The latter part of this afternoon and early part of this evening were both sunny but that easterly muck has just started to roll in once again from off the North Sea helped by the fact that the wind from off the North Sea is a little bit stronger than at this time yesterday. Because of that, the easterly muck appears to having more success in getting in this time than was the case at the same time yesterday.

It would appear though that the heatwave is over even in the Borders as today's maximum temperature at Charterhall was only 24.8°C which isn't quite high enough to keep that heatwave going and this means that the heatwave there which lasted from Thursday to Saturday inclusive is now officially over. That is more in line with what was forecast for today.

Meanwhile, the temperature here in Edinburgh is currently around 20°C.

A lovely fresh morning at 12c and even went for a walk at 9:30 and it was below 20c. We managed to get up to 29.2c so still very warm but this evening feels so much fresher than the past few days.

13 days in to July and our average daily max is just over 27c, currently beating 2018, although the mean 1 min is a few points below at 19.6c. Never thought we would have a chance of beating that month for a long time.

A rare one this summer - it's calm, warm (as usual), but overcast with light rain! A line of showers has been working its way northeastwards, and for once it wasn't shredded by the Downs... my part of Kent is under the widest part of the line.

16.6, dew 15.3, the overnight low so far is 15.9. Yesterday's high was 25.1 and there's been 0.8mm of rain from this shower so far.

Today started off with some easterly muck but that is already in the process of breaking through to allow the usual sunshine through.

The difference this time though is that there is also a band of raining showing up on the latest rain radar maps to my SW. I am about to head down to Hawick in the Scottish Borders where I will be spending a couple of weeks with my family, so I won't be back in Edinburgh until Monday 28 July 2025. No doubt, I will probably run into that band of rain on my way down there if it doesn't arrive here before I actually begin that trip.

Today is starting off on a rather warm and humid note with the temperature currently already at around 17°C here in Edinburgh.
