Put simply the GFS Op run is one of the most extreme runs I have ever seen for the southern half of the UK, and it isn't a wild outlier

The extreme temperatures are starting to come into the "somewhat more reliable" time frame now. Rather than being out in 300 hour lala land we now have 30C just five days away, rising to 34C in a week's time and 38C the following day.

Absolutely ludicrous warmth

Funny thing is the 06z still doesn't break the 1976 record of consecutive days above 32C. It just happens to go much higher.

The 00z "mean peak" 850 in the GEFS was 18.2C equating to 36ish at the surface, which was an increase on the previous day's runs. Let's see what 06z GEFS gives us.

I know most are focusing on the extreme temps (I'm not that bothered - happy with anything over 25c), but the story for me is the consistent signals in the models for the broadly settled and very summery weather to continue for a prolonged period.

We are hopefully looking at the development of a summer that will sit alongside other legends. And, if the models are right, even Scotland will increasingly get in on the party.

Still can't lose that nagging fear though that, like certain other summers that started off brilliantly then went downhill just as the kids broke up and 'summer proper' started (06, 13, 18 spring to mind, and I know there have been others), this one will go down the same route.

The mean GEFS 850mb temp is up to 16C in the SE corner at T204, giving a mean maximum of 32C on Saturday.

Next weekend is looking like a scorcher unless something dramatic happens.

AIFS 6z has low pressure nibbling at the NW . But it's still hot , mid to high 30s next weekend.

The GFS 6z operational is not an outlier 😱

Yes it's one of the hottest, but there's lots of support for next weekend.

Mid 30s at least is looking very much on the cards, possibly approaching or exceeding 40c. 🔥

Next Saturday looking seriously warm now.

The last four GFS runs (oldest first) have given maxima of 34C, 37C, 37C, 38C for Saturday.

Last two GEM runs: 32C, 33C.

Last four AIFS: 32C, 32C, 33C, 34C.

ECM is a bit of an outlier with 29C, 26C (it delays the heat till Sunday on the 00Z run).

FWIW one of the reasons 2022 was so severe was the dry airmass. The 6z GFS shows a similar picture - here's the 252 dewpoints. I noted back in 2022 it would be desiccating dry heat, and it amplified the effects on trees etc. Hope we swerve this one!

BBC weather standards in the 1980s and 90s:

21-24 Warm

25-27 Very warm

28-32 Hot

33+ very hot

28C was always the gateway level to “hot”. Even now in a warmer climate there’s something quite magical about 28. It’s when being outdoors in trousers becomes a little uncomfortable and the heat hits you when walking out of air conditioned buildings. It can still feel a tad chilly in 27C in a breeze.

Is there any real felt difference between a 27c and 28c temp? I imagine a 28c with low dewpoints and a bit of a breeze would feel a lot more pleasant and even cooler that a stagnant 27c with high dewpoints. 'Thresholds' in temp definitions I think are very shallow and don't take into account other factors.
