That was a stifling night - I've just woken up, my usual sort of time, but this time with some loud drumming sounds on the flat roof... turns out it was one of those "count the drops" (as someone said yesterday) showers. Looking to the east revealed a chaotic sky, with some bright pink towering cumulus... sadly by the time I went downstairs and got my phone the cloud had filled in.

The temperature is remarkable. It's 21.4, dew 16.8, and indoors it's still 27C, a lingering reminder of yesterday's max (of 32.4). It wasn't a "tropical night", though, as it briefly dipped to 19.4 around half eleven last night. It hovered around 20 for an hour or so, then rose steadily, reaching a high of 24.e at half two! It's then fallen slowly and steadily to the current 21.4.

GFS shows 850s are currently 19C, with the 20C isotherm bathing the south of Kent... it explains why temperatures "refused to fall", to misquote our friend from Scotland!

It's now 19.9, dew 16.7, and feels very sultry. I suspect there'll be quite a few people blearily trying to get back to sleep now!

EDIT: Another light burst and it finally did it, 0.2mm of rain. That'll last approximately four nanoseconds on the dustbowl that is north Kent, but it's still good to see.

It’s a warm start to the day here after overnight (brief) heavy rain and passing thunderstorms.

After a spotty thundery shower first thing this morning that put out a couple of forks and 2.6 mm of rain, it is now sunny. Currently 20.9 , yesterday's peak was 26.5 C.

Those showers may well have been brief and light (or moderate) where you are in the south of Edinburgh but here in the NW of Edinburgh where I am, they were really heavy for a while with a total of 4 mm of rain being recorded from that at Edinburgh Gogarbank in the space of just an hour.

That is quite significant as well because this also means that more rain has now fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank this month than the 1991-2020 June average. This means that regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month, this month will now go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts. This will go down as only our first wetter than average month of this year but this would have to happen in the summer which is just like the thing.😡

At the moment though, the Sun is shining with a temperature of around 19°C here in Edinburgh, so will probably end up getting yet another 20+°C maximum as we generally always do now (that was shown very well yesterday what that still ended up happening despite that being a very unlikely outcome not too long beforehand).

The rain showers forecast by the BBC to arrive in the early hours never arrived. The next chance they suggest, are some showers pushing up from the south on Wednesday. Possibly thundery.  Even so I won't count on them forming, let alone making it across the Channel intact.

The predominantly dry spring into early summer continues here.

A slight change to the status quo this morning in that although it's sunny and warm, there's a refreshing breeze. As it'll be the coolest day of the week (only 3C above average!) I'll be mowing the lawn later...

18.0, dew 12.7. Last night's low was 17.3 (6C above average) and yesterday's high was 26.8 (5C above average). 

Should perhaps be in the modelling thread but this seems to happen so often. Why?

You would think the Met Office/MeteoGroup would be on the ball  and trying to work out the reasons for this and adapt their forecasts.

But no they invariably stick to rain/showers spreading from the west or south or wherever which fail to materialise. And as for thundery stuff in recent years that we used to import most summers from France. Rare but not quite as hens teeth though getting there.

Brian, if you read this, have you any thoughts.

Very definitely so. Only one or two occasions in the last 20 years in Sussex, before that when we lived in Kent (admittedly further east) it must have happened every other year at least

10:30am and only 14 C. Hard work going up the hill this morning in the strong west wind!

It's also been very windy today with the winds at Edinburgh Gogarbank gusting up to around 45 mph from the WSW.

There has still been the odd shower around today, but nothing on the scale of what we saw yesterday and none of that really came to anything.

Apart from that, it's been a day in which there has been some cloud around, but also some sunny intervals.
