There's a couple of lively storms over in north-central France, but they appear to be heading more or less parallel to the coastline, rather than across the Channel towards Kent.

A couple of rumbles here about an hour ago  from about 7 miles away or so .  Certainly looks like the main lump of activity is heading the wrong way for a south coast hit.  Whether the other bit west of it heads across the channel remains to be seen.  Much as I would love a good flash and bang the garden would just appreciate some rain from this

Hmm, not as convinced as the forecast for these storms in Essex, Kent and East Anglia. Seem to be drifting a bit too far East for my liking but still looks possible. We will see. The form book of the last decade says no!

As I predicted (why can't Met Office, it was fairly obvious if you just tracked the radar?) it went further East and out into the North Sea. So my part of S.E Essex got a few flashes of lightning and 2.4mm of light rain. So no torrential downpours or 2cm hailstones! Did manage to get a pic of one of the lightning flashes though.

Goes without saying that was a lively one, lasted one & an half hour and 25 mm of rain fell in that time here at Folkestone harbour. While it was well forecast, apparently Dover had it worse as the storm system picked up strength as it trundled north eastwards along south Kent.

Even though there's only 23 miles of Kent to the east, it effectively just clipped this area... peak rainfall rate was only 11mm/hour.

I daresay social media will be full of the usual "Met Office couldn't forecast a council tax bill arriving" type of comments, as the amber warning area ended up being much too large and too far west.

Biggest storm here in Mid Suffolk for many years. The last one I can recall like it was in the 1980s. Just before midnight, all hell broke loose. While the densest lightning area was initially just off the coast, it all moved slowly northwards across East Suffolk to Norfolk. Because we were on its western edge, we could sit in our living room and watch the show of more than an hour of near continuous strobing lightning to the north, east and south of us. We did have a few un-nerving ground strikes very close by that briefly cut our power. Most seemed to be cloud to cloud with beautifull forked patterns across the sky.

The noise was amazing - continuous deep rumbling booms at high volume literally rattling the windows. We thought our cat would be terrified but he went outside to spent his time sitting under our garden table, largely unconcerned.

Thunderstorm-wise, warning was accurate for us, rain-wise, a non-event, allthough to be fair, there was a largish band of 50mm/hr rainfall just to our east. Neither the rain nor lightning seems to have caused any major problems and most villages seem to have kept power.

Just heard a rumble of thunder in the distance here in Edinburgh.

The rain has become heavier at times (though still not torrential) but a few bright echoes are starting to appear on the latest radar maps with some lightning strikes showing up to my south and west.

Thunder now becoming more frequent here in Edinburgh and slightly louder.

The brightest echoes on the radar maps appear to be to my east where there are now a number of lightning strikes showing up with frequent thunder continuing to be heard here in Edinburgh.

The activity is now moving away to my north and east, and the thunder has now died out here in Edinburgh

Just to update open the very severe flash flooding that occurred in Dover on Friday 13th June.  The storm moved in earnestly at around 10 pm.  Almost continuous strobe lightning high in the clouds accompanied by occasional cloud to ground forks heralded the most intense rainfall I have ever experienced, and I have travelled extensively in Australia and south east Asia.  The rainfall rates at times were off the scale.  Consequently the topography of the River Dour lower catchment with its steep slopes and preponderance of impermeable surfaces led to flash flooding.  Living as I do on the valley floor, I set about attempting to protect my property.  I succeeded through a 4 hour battle with the waters involving sandbags, a submersible pump, plastic sheeting and every towel in the house.  Ingress of water was minimal.  Sadly for every other house in the vicinity in the basement levels there is flooding, pumping out still going on.  Not an experience Id like to repeat but its been 18 years since the last flash flood (where I learned to apply all the above mitigations), though I am certain the warming climate will slash the return period in half at least.  Best moment was telling a thrill seeking Chav to "[censored]off" as he stood on my flood defence filming the chaos ensuing.

Congratulations on a successful defence! I know from friends' experience just how long it takes to dry out a flooded house

Thanks David.  Without one son mopping and wringing and the other applying pressure to the French doors and standing on about 10 towels pushed against the French Windows it would be a far worse outcome.  We then transferred to bailing out the area at the back of the house (outside) using my beer fermenting bin and buckets.  We then transferred to bailing out the insides of neighbouring properties.  Turned in at 2.20 am.
