Probably because of the warm and dry conditions but I've noticed huge amounts of insects this Spring. The garden is full of hoverflies which were very scarce last year, also lots of bees, butterflies and countless midges, flies etc of all kinds. I've also noticed a lot more splats on the number plate and windscreen this year.

They have now moved and found a new home. Hope it's not my loft.

The other half went out to collect the trail cam at 6am and heard/saw a cuckoo flying north over the garden. Several good clips of the garden badger too, 11.36pm -  11.49pm.  She puts a few peanuts and raisins out as a treat - which are very much enjoyed! 🦑

I seem to have a resident hedgehog in the garden. I saw it the other morning when I was going off in the dark and it had set off a security light. Last night before bed I 'spilt' some fish food pellets by a raised pool as a test.

This morning all pellets gone. Five or so Tetra bits I placed but proof enough for me. The hedgehog seems to drink the water from one of my slug/snail control hosta 'moated castles' I'm trying this year.Β

Sort of reminds me of the Tiger who came to tea, drinkling all the water from the tap. Well sort of.

Pots with plants set in large dishes of water. One drunk dry the other still filled.Β  Could be one hosta is thirstier than the other of course.

Not a lot of slugs or snails this year visible, though they were there a few weeks ago after the last rain. The hedgehog should assist me of course in a mollusc pogrom.

We have a terrific local place called The Walled Garden near the village of Baumber.Β

"Walled Garden Baumber is an innovative and beautiful 4 acre walled garden, full of hidden surprises and vastly different from the traditional kitchen garden that it once was. It is owned by designer and photographer, Sonia and David Elton."

I see they have a Steampunk weekend coming up - May 10th/11th (Sat/Sun) – Steampunk Weekend (10am-4pm). We have [rashly] decided to give it a try. 🀣🀣🀣

If you are ever driving on the A158 Lincoln - Skegness Road it is worth a visit.

Bloody clueless male osprey has just brought his mate a large twig. [06.20hrs] She's been dealing with it whilst trying to stay on her egg.Β  Does he not get she'd rather have some breakfast? Good grief! Keep watching...

We've been enjoying this year's starling "teenagers" as they discover what fun it is to all have a bath together! What a riot! It's amazing how much topping-up I've had to do. We've had quite a crowd in the garden today learning the ropes. One thumped into a window in what looked like a chasing or racing game. I've put 2 fat blocks up for the parents to use. Great success!

Couldn't see what was setting it off so I assume the wee spikey was looking for more pond pellets. Creature of habit? Not rats because if they are present they leave copious poo. Plenty of sparrows this year. Could do with rain for the sparrows... (and garden which is quite dry).

DustΒ  baths though good for mite reduction are not perhaps the same as a good communal water bath. You know share water with a friend and all that. The generally dry easterly has morphed into a generally dry westerly around here. Even the BBC are coming round to that. Yesterday heavy showers from midday they predicted. Today This morning will be dry and partly cloudy. In the afternoon, cloud will become more widespread, and the odd light shower cannot be ruled out. Moderate winds.

Tuesday is the next last chance saloon for rain here perhaps before it drys sic up again?

Tuesday

Tomorrow morning, early sunshine will be replaced by cloudy skies and outbreaks of rain later in the morning. In the afternoon, the rain will continue and be heavy at times. Strengthening winds.

Thinking back to the insect comments, I am convinced I have greater numbers and more species in the garden this year than I can remember in a quarter of a century. The weather must be playing a part, and admittedly we garden for wildlife, with fallow areas, pollinator planting, woodland bank and pond, but even so the variety of bees, beetles, hoverflies and moths have taken us by surprise. I have had to consult to books more than ever (in a typical year I might do this now and then but it's been pretty much daily that I see an unfamiliar visitor that I can't identify in a click.)

I'm aware of the ongoing dearth over recent years, which saddens me greatly, and this might just be an anomalous spike year due to growing conditions etc, but I do feel pleased.

I remember sitting outside the Roxas field office Palawan drinking beer and a pangolin sniffing around my feet with its long tickly snout looking for foot flavoured ants. Until someone caught and ate it in the next door neighbours compound. A sea turtle though we did rescue and put back in the sea further north. A diplomatic nightmare though to do it under the cover of darkness.

I've still got a hedgehog here IMBY coming around looking for snacks each night. Safer living here than going out on the road.

But yes it's invariably SM where you see these things. The ubiquitousness of phone/cameras.

A converted fox. Wonders never cease.Β

My hedgehog enjoys halibut pellets more than Tetra floaters. I tried the other night and it left the Tetra ones.Β

The tench prefer them too when I feed them. The goldfish are not fussy.

But a habitual hedgehog it's becoming in its nocturnal wanderings around the garden.Β

I enjoyed watching Springwatch. I always notice the stark contrast between the 'mindfull moments' section where we just see the beautiful images of nature, with much of the rest of the show which is packed with the absolute brutality of nature. Infanticide, cannibalism, horror, death and murder is the everyday reality for many creatures.Β Β
