The place mentioned, Litworowy Kocioł, a glacial cirque , had extensive snowdrifts persisting into July in 2023 when I was in the Tatras.

It was -18C in our freezer last night. A new record.

More proof that there is cold around just not for the UK meanwhile SE Europe and NE America continues to remain in the freezer. Heavy snow in Istanbul and single figure temperatures in Nicosia (Cyprus) by end of the week and possibly snow for Athens...snow for Jerusalem on Sunday... You couldn't make it up could you?

What has bugged me the most about this cooler weather here is that we have had colder weather but nver been cold enough for a proper widespread frost or even a flake of snow. Temps of 4c to +5c by day and 3c by night with a slack easterly but  an overcast easterly with cloud preventing frost and occasional cold rain. Yuck! - Roll on spring.

Must be local effects in play and the cold 850s as you go higher up having an impact.

For the record, both Krakow and Warsaw saw minima of -12°C last night (around 8 or 9°C below average for both locations).

But was it representative of Hertfordshire or a irrelevant meteorological quirk? The latter.

I wonder how long there has been a recording station at that location. As others have said, it's not particularly representative and it may be a record simply because the location hasn't had a long history of recording temperatures.

And keep in mind, this station was in ground zero on the night.
