Woken up at 0400 by an almighty flash of lightning then a thunderclap, very close.

Thought I could smell burning, but after a cursory look nothing untoward in my immediate vicinity.

These showers accompanied by significant hail content certainly carry some punch.

There seems to be quite a bit of lightning up north currently in that trough heading in this direction.

Also looking lively over the English Channel/French side but all passing by where it is currently fine and sunny here at Folkestone. I'll take that. 😁

Rumbling away over Brixham
Happily living by the sea in Brixham......but sad to leave the snowy Chiltern Hills after 35 years!

We had some heavy rain here then it all changed and for the first time it seems this year brilliant sunshine.

And long distant visibility.

Still breezy.

Wasn't much in the way of drama at this end today, just an hours of light/blustery rain amounting to 3.8 mm (some of it was from showery rain earlier on in the morning) and the wind wasn't that notable. Now clear skies.

Amazing amount of thunder and lightening over Brixham both yesterday and this morning accompanied by very heavy rainfall. Rare to experience this in January

Back in the office and this should be in the gardening thread but just had a delivery of snowdrops in the green.

Luckily the postman said he would have left them in a safe spot.

Have to get them in now ASAP. Better than being on the coast perhaps, where I should have been repairing seized up window hinges.

Potent little storm rolled in around 1pm.

Lots of hail with around 7-8 loud rumbles in about 5 minutes. Lightning was overhead.

There's some shallow convection going on via the North Sea - very reminiscent of winters past, with a steady stream of shower clouds merging to form prolonged periods of rain and small hail.

Good to see the "lake effect" still works, even if it's a few degrees too warm!
