Best measure or not, it is apparently a new record which is the whole point. It is seemingly the strongest gust on record in Ireland. Your comment was about records, I posted one.

Met Eireann reporting that they're not receiving data from a number of key sites on the West Coast due to the severe weather - these include amongst others Mace Head and Bellmullet.

Significant storm surge reported in Galway.

560,000 without power and about 10% of the entire mobile network down.

Highest wind gusts at Edinburgh Gogarbank are already up to around 48 mph from the SSW and it's already getting a bit wild and noisy here but the conditions are forecast to get a lot worse than that and the Met Office are now predicting the wind gusts at Edinburgh Gogarbank to peak at around 88 mph from the SW at roughly 1pm GMT (14:00 UTC) this afternoon.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

My location is in eastern Co. Galway.  It was stated under my profile but seems to be missing for some reason.  I'll update for future ref.

I was just watching Gavin P.'s daily 6am forecast and on that, there was a possible highest wind gust of 91 mph showing up for here in Edinburgh.

That would be quite unprecedented for here if that was to come up and so, I'm hoping that this particular model has overdone that as it's still looking likely to be bad enough as it is.

It's incredible that Ireland and The Central Belt has almost shut down for the day. There are 5 million people in the red areas

The strong winds are just arriving here, quite noisy as we approach 50mph but expecting much worse in the coming hours. No bin collections so they are tucked away safely round the back! I've secured everything I can in the garden

It was quite surreal being on a busy double decker bus from town at 6pm yesterday when the disaster alarm sounded on the phones of over 50 people, it's quite a loud alarm with frantic vibration!!

Fingers crossed for everyone

Maximum Wind gusts at Edinburgh Gogarbank now up to around 60 mph from the south with worse yet still to come.

Even as it is though, that already makes yesterday (since it's not 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) yet) our windiest day of the winter so far with today being likely to beat that as the strongest winds are expected to occur well after 9am this morning.

Not sure where the weather station is but if it was at the lighthouse I expect that would record the highest gusts.

It would be ironic if the wind recording devices stopped working due to the wind strength today!

As far as I know, Charterhall in the Scottish Borders is not within our red warning area and yet there has already been a reported wind gust there of around 71 mph from the SSW.

It's very gusty here highest so far 74mph at 7am since then it has eased slightly but worst is forecast to be an hour either side of noon.

We are only just in amber warning but typically get 10mph more than met office forecast says and it says 68mph around midday.

It's noticeable here that exposed hill top sites often get lower gusts that on lee slopes for example you can't get more exposed than Lion Inn at Blakey their peak so far is 59mph

https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IFARNDAL3

The WX station there is fully exposed to it at the back of the pub though only at about 7 feet above ground, however ground rises up so that's more or less at rooftop height.

Tan Hill is another classic exposed site that doesn't always beat mine however they have an 87mph already.

https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IRICHM103

Both these exposed locations have WX stations installed by friend of mine they run on wifi networks there is no normal broadband.

He has about 20 scattered across North Yorks.

On this occasion though, this will hopefully mean that just about everyone is adhering to the various warnings which will at least help to minimise any possible casualties from this particular event.

Tiree reporting 941.9mb at 9am which is the lowest pressure I've seen from Éowyn so far.

Not as low as storm Dirk back in 2013 (Xmas Eve) which reached 936.8mb at Stornoway.

(Incidentally I had assumed Éowyn was an Irish name but apparently it's from Tolkien?)
