Oct. 87 storm for us, meant sustained wind speeds of 75Kts for over an hour. It was horrendous.

I'm not sure that's an unmixed blessing. People are out during the day, at least if unwary or unavoidably outside, and so more at risk.

1987 - the Great Storm for SE England, overnight - 18 deaths

1990 - the Burns Day Storm for N England and Scotland, daytime - 47 deaths

Either way, it's not a good look for tomorrow - stay in shelter!

Here in Edinburgh, it's just been officially confirmed that Lothian Buses have taken the decision to suspend all services for the entire duration of the red warning, so there will be no buses running during that period and quite a number of flights which were due to fly in and out of Edinburgh Airport have also been cancelled.

Furthermore, Scotrail have also suspended all rail services for that period so there's not likely to be any trains running in or out of Edinburgh either.

As for the buses, this is only the first time that I can remember when the buses have been taken off the road for a different reason other than because of snow or some sort of strike or industrial action but this just goes to show just bad the situation is here and I would expect the same situation to arise in Glasgow as well.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

This is the most extreme (in terms of wind) aviation forecast I remember seeing.

TAF EINN 231700Z 2318/2418 16012KT 9999 SCT025 BECMG 2320/2322 13025G40KT -RA BKN012 PROB40 TEMPO 2321/2401 3000 +RA BKN005 FEW018CB BECMG 2401/2403 23040G65KT FEW015 SCT025 TEMPO 2403/2407 26050G85KT -SHRA FEW018CB BECMG 2410/2412 25030G50KT BECMG 2416/2418 25020G30KT

That is for Shannon airport in the Republic of Ireland and shows gusts up to 98 mph.

In terms of shipping areas, Shannon, Rockall and Malin now all have hurricane force winds mentioned. The former two have the sea state forecast of phenomenal, which is wave height of over 14 metres (or 46 feet).

I should have said above also that tge central west coast is going to see the worst. We're looking at gusts possibly above 100mph.

Hi guys, as already mentioned earlier there was reports of tornados in Cornwall, I've just had a video sent of damage done to Trevornick holiday park and it's total devastation, static caravans just torn apart, some on upside down, lodges torn apart and turned to kindling. How much of the site has been destroyed I don't know but what I can see it's much of the site, horrendous. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?extid=MSG-UNK-UNK-UNK-IOS_GK0T-GK1C&v=944862844417742. I've copied and pasted the link, whether it works I'm not sure.

If UK MET UKV 15z is accurate then the all time windspeed records for Glasgow and Edinburgh are under threat with gusts topping 100mph.

The north and west of Ireland gets absolutely hammered with the all time Irish wind speed (124mph) likely to go.

There's a grid point with a staggering 137mph just off the coast.

Brian, I imagine, could find higher on the high res output.

A truly dangerous storm.

I've just heard that the M&S has just announce that their store here in NW Edinburgh will be closed tomorrow as will their other stores throughout Edinburgh. I would imagine that a lot of the big name stores will be closed over this period as well and I've also heard that the local council have cancelled all of tomorrow's refuse collections.

In addition to that, NHS Lothian have also cancelled all non-urgent appointments during that period although one taxi firm have said that they will still try to operate as normally as possible during that period.

There are after all, people who might need more urgent NHS care although I fear for those who might need that under those conditions.

That’s a first for me from the meto - gusts in excess of 120mph for a couple of hours at low level, admittedly at a very exposed site.

I would be very seriously battening down the hatches if I were on the West Coast of Ireland.
