Cold sunny day.

Frost has remained in the shade all day.

It's still frosty in the shade here as well, which is rare these days. The temperature's started to fall even though the sun's not even set yet, another sign of a cold Arctic airmass.

Currently 3.3, dew 0.3, the high being 4.3.

Nou eer alack, ma maister dear,

I fear a deadly storm.’

‘A saw the new muin late yestreen

Wi the auld muin in her airm

And gif we gang tae sea, maister,

A fear we’ll cam tae hairm.’

[Ballad of Sir Patrick Spens]

Indeed, a brilliant old crescent moon tonight encompassing the 'old moon' illuminated by earthlight. Sir Patrick Spens got his storm, fatally, and something nasty is brewing up here for tomorrow But why a crystal-clear atmosphere should be linked to bad weather, I don't know.

There appeared to be a little bit more in the way of cloud around today compared to yesterday and yet today was sunnier than yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank with a total of 4.7 hours of sunshine being recorded.

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank is officially confirmed as 3.6°C so although frost has persisted all day once again in shaded areas, today has ended up being not all that cold for the time of year when you consider that we are now into the winter equivalent of high summer and the coldest month of the year according to the 1991-2020 averages.

However, the temperatures have now dropped away quickly and it's currently around -1°C here in Edinburgh with an official air frost being recorded at all three of my local stations for the third night in a row, thus maintaining a 100% record so far for air frosts within this year, something which doesn't happen very often these days.

3c milder today with a high of 3.9c due to more maritime influence, but dry and sunny all day.

Frost still hung around all day though in the shade including on some pavements.

Now 0.2c and frosty again .

Down to -3 C again here. The street is sparkling in the frost. I wonder if those showers coming in from the west will reach Edinburgh 🤔

Despite the temperatures still being slightly below freezing, it's now RAINING here in NW Edinburgh with the frost very quickly disappearing as a result.😡

You really couldn't make that up!!😡

Temperature now up to -0.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at midnight.

Somewhat unusual here - it's overcast but the temperature's been falling slowly all morning and everything's covered in frost. A good sign that an Arctic airmass is in place!

It's currently -1.3, dew -2.4, and that's the overnight low. Yesterday's high was 4.3.

Today has started off with a lot of cloud around with only a few breaks in that cloud.

As a result, the temperature has gone up to around 2°C here in Edinburgh which isn't even all that cold any more, and the recent frost appears to have completely disappeared now thanks to the odd overnight rain shower here in NW Edinburgh.😡

Now down to -5.1°C in my city garden currently with just over 10 cm of level snow. The temperature at the airport has just dipped to -8°C.

I wonder how much of the snow will be washed away by the easterly muck here tomorrow before the colder air comes back in.

As John has mentioned, rain showers filtered in from the west overnight on to the frozen ground. This morning we have glaze and black ice, it's lethal underfoot. Our 3 day frost is still evident but now covered with ice!!

A low of -3 C overnight, rising to +1 C in the early hours. Back down to 0 C now

Frosty, overcast and a very slight breeze 0.2c with the overnight low of -0.6c in my back garden. Yesterdays frost patches that remained all day have now grown and have a much thicker layer. 2 consecutive nights of frost have really made a big difference to the grass in the garden.

Everything is slightly damp just now but the pavements now have a covering of black ice making everything very treacherous.

The temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank as a write is still at 1.8°C but the temperature at the botanic gardens is back down to -0.3°C and that is the station which is actually closest to where I live here in NW Edinburgh.

Furthermore, I also still have a very good view from my south facing kitchen window of the snow covered Pentland Hills in the distance.
