I remember on 8th December 1981 the amount of snow caught forecasters out. According to Richard Mabey in his book Cold Comforts the annual rugby Varsity match was played in 6 inches of snow at Twickenham. I thought surprises like this were a thing of the past.

Similarly this year seems to have over-delivered wrt forecasts in the lowland south. Snow fell and covered much almost down to sea level in places. Less than an hour before the heavy stuff started here, the local BBC forecast was still insisting there might be a few sleety bits down to lower levels with some snow possible over higher ground. I know marginal events are difficult to forecast. It must have been even harder this time with near surface temperatures between 1 and 2 C when the first flakes fell- and these were not preceded by any rain that simply turned due to dry air and intensity.

More remarkably it's two and a half weeks earlier than the '81 surprise. Sad it doesn't look to continue the same way.

A late report but I was surprised to get a thin dusting of snow overnight here in the flatlands.

It's rare to get snow showers here so far inland in a northerly set-up, and even more unusual coming in from a north-westerly direction.

Looks like quite a significant snow to rain event up North. Rare these days.

Here in NW Edinburgh, initial rain has turned to sleet and wet snow which is making everything a bit slushy.

Another Amber issued for the Pennines. I'm not surprised after reading Tim's reports from NW Leeds

Pretty decent fall. 9-10cm of snow at it's peak and strong winds making for drifting.

Turned to ice pellets at 8.30 and rain for 9.

Been out sledging in the peak of it. Thaw now.

3cm here now, even covered the main road. Smaller but more intense flakes blowing along on a freshening east wind. Temperature 0 C

I've noted the 'turned to rain' comments from further south though 🙄

I was busy doing other things for a while but I've now just looked out and discovered that the snow is now lying even here in NW Edinburgh with a nice Christmas Card scene.

In addition to that, the temperature has now dropped back to around 0°C here in Edinburgh.

It's just a shame now that all of that is likely to disappear later on once the milder air moves in.

I've just ventured out to the shops and it's absolutely freezing out there with quite a bit of snow lying around.

If my memory serves me rightly, this is probably now the most amount of snow which we've had in November since 2010 which is actually quite impressive when you consider that we're still not yet into the actual meteorological winter (it would therefore just be like the thing if the actual winter itself ended up being snow-free as has been the case all too often in more recent years).

All of this reminds me of when I was a kid that used to get excited about snow and be plying in the snow, building snowmen and throwing snowballs around as kids tended to do on a regular basis back in those days.

Sadly, it's not so much like that nowadays and when I did briefly venture out, even the kids were complaining about it being too cold for them.

Here in NW Edinburgh though, what is hitting against my window appears to be much harder (like ice pellets) and the thaw appears to be already slowly getting underway with a current temperature of around 1°C here in Edinburgh.

12 cm and 0C. Wind getting up a bit now. 110m asl, 40 miles WNW Edinburgh, 20 miles N of Glasgow. Road in village a bit chaotic, with empty low loader stuck, various other vehicles, some rear wheel drive, plus two snow ploughs one above, one below on hill.

2-3 inches in south Edinburgh around the bypass, went for a walk before it all melts later

Plenty of cars stuck and a bus, gritters now out and about though

When the wind blew in my face it was sometimes little ice pellets which was sore 😞

I've just read that Lothian Buses have taken all of their services off the road here in Edinburgh because of all of the snow which has been around this morning.

The last time I can remember that happening was when we had the Beast From The East event in 2018 which resulted in us being under an official Met Office red warning for snow at that time.

A maximum snow depth of 2cm has been recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank which is our highest snow depth of this month so far although it looked to me as though there was more than that here in Edinburgh.

The fact that the buses aren't running is therefore once again showing us just how much everything in this country tends to grind to a halt whenever we get the the least bit of snow.

Meanwhile, the equivalent rainfall total from this particular event so far is 10.0 mm at Edinburgh along with 7.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh so this particular event as well as giving us our highest November snow depth since 2010 has also virtually quadrupled our rainfall totals for this month with more rain (that is likely to just be rain from now on rather than snow) still likely to come over the course of this weekend.

We went to Chatsworth yesterday (great Xmas market) and, driving through the Derbyshire Dales, there was still patches of snow next to some dry stone walls where it had presumably banked up.
