Turned out to be a fair & dry day with good sunny spells and a peak of 19.9 C at 12.30 pm. If it wasn't for that brisk onshore SW breeze, I would have been able to comfortably sit outside on garden chair in shorts & T shirt.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

Total since 10 am BST (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 1.2 mm (as at 7:00 am BST (06:00 UTC) this morning on Tuesday 24 September 2024)

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 37.8 mm (68.5% of 1991-2020 September average)

Number of rain days during this month: 8 (75.9% of 1991-2020 September average)

Number of dry days during this month: 10

This means that at least another 17.4 mm of rain still needs to fall between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go

down as being wetter than average in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

In addition to that, at least another 3 official rain days still need to be recorded between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

We had a very wet start to this month and for a while, it had looked as though this was going to be a very wet month but that has not turned out to the case and yesterday was only the first official rain day at Edinburgh Gogarbank since 14 September 2024. so it really hardly ever rains here in Edinburgh any more.

Seasonal Data

Total for this autumn so far: 37.8 mm (17.9% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of rain days during this autumn: 8 (22.0% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of dry days during this autumn: 10

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 681.6 mm (86.9% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days during this year: 108 (78.6% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days during this year: 99

Absolutely shambolic MetO forecast for here tonight. A dry and settled night in the text forecast. It’s lashing down and the radar shows it’s not isolated either

Rain clearing eastwards brings a settled, though rather cloudy night for many. Scattered showers in the far southwest spill more widely across Cornwall through the night, turning heavy at times. Breezy and feeling cooler along the south coast. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

Think it's a good reminder that precipitation is hard to forecast.  I have a special interest in whether it will rain this morning as have outdoor plans. We have a weather warning worse case 80-100mm rain. Met office symbols show heavy rain.  So you would assume from that it will be dreadful. It's dry currently (and has been most of the night) as the band is further North. Models show a variety of options and some do model it dry here with the rain further North.  We normally only notice these things when snow is possible.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 10 am BST (09:00 UTC) this morning: 20.0 mm

This makes yesterday our wettest day of this autumn so far by quite a considerable amount.

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 58.2 mm (105.5% of 1991-2020 September average)

Number of rain days during this month: 9 (85.4% of 1991-2020 September average)

Number of dry days during this month: 11

This means that more rain has now fallen during this month than the 1991-2020 September average and so regardless of what happens

during the rest of this month, this month will now go down as being wetter than average in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

However, at least another 2 official rain days still need to be recorded between now and the end of this month in order for this month to

go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

Seasonal Data

Total for this autumn so far: 58.2 mm (27.5% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of rain days during this autumn: 9 (24.7% of 1991-2020 autumn average)

Number of dry days during this autumn: 11

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 702.0 mm (89.5% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of rain days during this year: 109 (79.3% of 1991-2020 annual average)

Number of dry days during this year: 100

Not surprised to hear that Woburn has had its wettest month on record. And after today's rain there'll probably be another downpour on Monday .......

Not counting today we're up to a rather daft 231mm IMBY now. (I've had a quick look around some of the local stations and they're at similar monthly values so assume it's not an overcount).

A lot of the rain has been of the heavy variety, with 5 events exceeding 30mm and several thunderstorms.
