Faint auroras visible only to cameras is not what we expected from a potent Cannibal CME. But maybe this wasn't the Cannibal. A NOAA forecast model suggests an arrival time later on July 30th, so naked eye auroras might still be in the offing.

It's not that simple though!

Because the magnetic north pole is over northern Canada, the auroral ring is skewed much further south over America. Right now it's centred at 60N over Canada (roughly on a par with Helsinki), whereas in our part of the world it's at 75N.

Add 15 degrees to the Grand Canyon and you get 51N, which still sounds good - that's the south of the UK.

But then as we're further north, we get a much shorter and shallower night.

Here, at 52N, we currently get 3 hours of night with the sun, at its lowest, 20 degrees below the horizon.

The Grand Canyon gets 6 and a half hours of night, with the sun reaching 34 degrees below the horizon.

In other words - all things being equal, you'd prefer the Grand Canyon in terms of viewing opportunity... longer and deeper nights mean a better chance of seeing it.

STRONG GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A close encounter with a CME on Aug. 4th sparked a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm. So far, auroras have been sighted as far south as latitude +39N in Colorado. If the storm persists (it might not), mid-latitude auroras may be visible in the USA and Europe during the night of Aug. 4-5.

Will it last into the evening? There still another five hours or so until darkness, so personally I can't see it. The graphs look very impressive either way.

Cloud and light pollution might spoil it. Keep watching those links. Space Weather says: "Today's strong G3-class geomagnetic storm has just intensified to category G4 (Severe). This means mid- to low-latitude auroras may be visible from any dark location on Earth."

Yes - eye and camera tell two very different stories. Nevertheless, you sometime strike lucky, so it's always worth a try.
