Btw, how does one post photos on TWO?

You could always share them on the TWO Gallery, you can find that on the home page.

Gah, I hate summer even more now... why couldn't that have happened in winter, when I'm actually awake when it's dark! 😂

Nothing to see this morning, just low cloud and gloom, even though it's still going on.

Amazing few hours even here in inner London. Here are a few I captured:

"The Northern Lights are making a rare appearance across the UK, delighting sky watchers up and down the country.
Excited onlookers shared pictures of the lights, also known as aurora borealis, from areas including Liverpool, Kent, Norfolk and Sussex. There have also been sightings in parts of Scotland."

Risking it being some sort of porn or other dodgy content, I clicked through anyway... fantastic photos there! 👍

Local social media is alive with photos, so I can see what I missed: fantastic waves of pink and green, even some purple by the looks of it. My webcam caught it too, shining behind the Scots Pine, albeit only in shades of grey as it was nighttime.

Remarkable, I can't recall there being such widespread aurora before down here... the times I've seen it have been a green glow on the northern horizon, rather than (judging by the webcam) pretty much overhead!

Visible in the S Downs and lots of watchers out to see it. Very much overhead , but not visible toward the S Horizon.

I missed the spectacular colours, but that could be my poor pink/green colour vision - people were picking them up with some colour enhancement on their phone cameras.

This is a quite the coronal mass ejection. Aurora clear to see here in Perth this morning, we are equivalent of North Africa in the northern hemisphere. It appears there are six pulse phases so this will continue through the weekend. The potential damage to communication and electronics across Earth have to be considered.

If anything the strongest bit here was slightly to the south of overhead. More pinks and purples to the South and overhead and greens to the North.   But you could see it all clearly and flickering/moving with  the naked eye, even on the edge of a big city.

Given it appeared overhead and even to the south and the fact it's not properly dark the further north you go, I  wonder what the optimum latitude for viewing was?

Reading the comments on here and some of the photos online etc, I also get a feeling that last night was indeed a once in a lifetime event. I'm 26 and I wonder if we'll see an aurora that strong again before even I pop it?

And I also don't know what I'm more impressed by - the aurora or the fact it occurred on a clear night? 😮

I didnt even know about this until I read this thread late last night but it was all over. What time did it happen? I was probably in the pub but nobody there mentioned anything.

I occurred roughly between 11 pm - 12 am. It caught me a bit of a surprise, as previous red alerts have only produced very little display here in Sheffield but it was amazing considering it was in light polluted parts of Sheffield. Managed to get a few photos of it.

Great show, but the colours tended to come out stronger on camera than to the naked eye.

For those that missed it a few points to make you feel better.

Conditions still look good for tonight!

Also the photos are slightly misleading, it doesn't look like that with the naked eye. Its still absolutely spectacular, but the camera shots are high exposure; to the naked eye you can still see the pillars but the colours are much dimmer.

It was still an amazing experience!
