I think it is a relatively regular occurrence just slightly larger than normal this time and in the proximity to people, hence the media coverage. In isolation it’s not really indicative of any increase in overall activity.

Having said that I don’t think I would have liked to have been right beside the explosion!

Lots of speculation over the last few days that the grindivik volcano is going to blow again but nothing really happening at all.

Thanks for that heads-up. Here's CNN's report on the eruption:

I have come across this interesting webpage on "Volcano Discovery". Might prove useful...

I did wonder of there would be volcanic activity in Kamchatka after that magnitude 7 quake. Thankfully it’s in an rea well used to such activity. I love this image  of the eruption, almost surreal.

Iceland on fire once again.

Edit: As far as I can tell from the cam footage, the eruption is taking place pretty much where previous eruptions have. Blue Lagoon power plant could be under threat again if it continues for a few days. Workers still there building dams. Fair play to them.

There is currently some decent live drone footage of this latest ongoing eruption:

More just for the historical interest. Reporter and geologists right on the crater of Mt. St. Helen's a couple of weeks before it went boom. Even in the short while they were were on it, the instability was evident.  I can only imagine what a scary experience it must have been in that moment.

Another eruption in iceland in the same location as the previous ones, started in the last hour or so but not as big as previously

Site of volcanic eruption in 1831 finally identified as Kuril Islands off Alaska. It caused a world-wide dip in temps of 1C.
