A rather strenuous New Year's Eve walk along the coast while the Army had opened the Lulworth Ranges for walking, as they do every Christmas/New Year. A wind warning was in force for the area - you'd better believe it!

Looking west from Flowers Barrow to Bindon Hill, and, yes, the path does go straight UP the hill on the other side.

From more or less the same point at more or less the same time as the above; there were indeed showers about

UserPostedImage

Nice wave pattern, but the waves were submerging the beach at the foot of the cliff below - which is part of the SW Coast Path!

To show that it did actually rain

I finished up by taking a walk round Tyneham. The villagers were expelled at 48 hours notice in 1943 in aid of D-day training with a promise that they would return - but they were never allowed to. Good exhibition in the church when the ranges are open.

For comparison with no. 2 above, this photo was taken 28/12/2004 with much better weather, sunny and cool

You were adventurous to head for the cliffs yesterday David.  Excellent pictures.

I'll be that direction on Wednesday for a meeting.

And then on the 21st for a beach clean (beachcomb you never know what will turn up especially after these incessant gales) at Worbarrow followed by a pub lunch in Wareham. Hope the weather plays ball. Last year was frosty and the river floods frozen.

If you can find the time, please watch the Sea Monster story this evening.

I have no idea what it's like but the head is enormous.

And Happy New Year to all on TWO too.

Nick

PS I was to the left and a bit of that rainbow in your picture. The rains seems to merge for most of the afternoon over me.

Re Lulworth Cove, Nick. I had a colleague in the 70s who had nearly gelded himself abseiling there while on National Service!

Lincolnshire seems to be swamped with Waxwings just now. I've just encountered an article on Lincolnshire Dialect relating to Sarah Sophia Banks (1774–1818) you may find of interest. I recommend "...dialect song in the MS. entitled “The Scolding Wife, a New Song in the Lincolnshire Dialect."

Thanks for that Roger. I'm hoping to introduce Sarah to a wider audience next year.

She'd have got on with William Barnes perhaps, though I don't think she visited Dorset.

No waxwings here though yesterday just before dark there was a long tailed tit just outside the sitting room window.

I haven't seen one of those before in the garden. And very close up too.

The deluge continues.
