After much squeezing in amongst the other hundreds of visitors, I managed to get some photos from the viewing gallery of the Shard last week on a sunny (but a little misty) day

As well as these two snaps of the “classic” views of the Square Mile and Canary Wharf, I managed to visit all corners of the 2-floor viewing gallery to get enough images to form a 360 degree panorama. When reflections were edited out this took 32 separate images stitched together and even then some reflections still remained.

I did the same exercise in April 2013 and ended up with a 360 panorama on that occasion too – actually a bit more successfully if truth be told – so I can now superimpose them on top of one another to see how much the skyline has altered in that 10 years

I gave up counting but at least 100 new tower blocks look to have appeared in that 10 years and whereas before there were really only two “downtown” environments in the City of London and Canary Wharf, there now seem to be several more growing rapidly. In the 2023 image there are clearly groups developing at Elephant and Castle, Vauxhall/Battersea, Waterloo and Blackfriars visible.

You did well to lose the reflections! Here's my version of your Tower Bridge / Canary Wharf shot, taken on a murky February day in 2016 (I was with my dad, it was our last trip together). It's impressive just how many extra towers have gone up since!

It is visible actually - about 90 degrees right from Canary Wharf alongside the other one (Croydon  I think)

Great photos. I worked in the News Building next door to the Shard from 2014 to 2020 so saw the skyline changing over time. My desk was on the 9th floor with a view across the river.

Incidentally, yesterday I went up the Battersea Power Station chimney lift, which I didn't even know existed. The view is incredible and the lift is quite an experience too - it pops out of the top of the chimney with glass on all sides. The weather was crystal clear too.

I was in Tokyo in 2017 and went up to the viewing gallery in the Sky Tree which as just over twice the height of the Shard and the tallest building in Japan at 2080 feet

It is interestung to compare the view from here compared to the Shard and see the difference between a major city like London and a Megacity like Tokyo

To my untutored eye this is an order of magnitude bigger than London - in fact I believe the the relative populations are about 10 million for London and 35 million for Tokyo

(Part of the viewing gallery was closed off by a private restaurant so annyingly only got about 300 degrees of the 360 degree view)

Amazing panorama Martin. I have never been to Japan but it is on the list. Tokyo certainly looks much bigger than London as you say - and a whole lot less green!
