Last Sunday I emptied a pot in my garden. I’ve just measured it and since then we’ve had just over 160mm of rain. Currently raining as I type this. Lots of issues with surface water flooding on cross Pennine routes this week.

I’m sure come May we’ll have something like 3mm for the whole month. Seems to be the norm the past 5 years. Big extremes.

It has actually stopped raining at last, present total is 117.8 for the month. At 09:30 this morning we had a cloudburst which gave a reading of 82.2mmph, only a short bust but was insane for a couple of minutes, I've never recorded anything near that total before.

68.4mm this week at Chilgrove in the Downs near here. Groundwater has responded by moving above flood level and water is running out of gardens and down roads. Big tankers in place pumping out foul water to stop that being carried down with the groundwater overflow - not seen that since 2014 IIRC. At Lavant village the stream is out of its banks (remember it was dry at the beginning of Dec) and beginning to sheet across the village green.

EDIT - reports of 25-40mm on top of this for last night's rain in Sussex, seems to have been heaviest to wards the east.

150 mm to date after last night's deluge which caused considerable local flooding .
it's frankly unbelievable that in 2.5 months since the start of Nov we have had some 26 inches of rain surely the wettest ever such period here bearing in mind an annual average of around 32 inches here . Truly extraordinary

... and the result ...

We have already measured more than the average monthly rainfall in January 2023. Groundwater levels are very close to the surface; at the very top of our boreholes in East Dean and Chilgrove. Groundwater flood impacts are expected to continue until at least February 2023. With springs appearing, water flowing on roads and water in basements or under floorboards of properties in East Dean, Charlton, Singleton and West Dean. Groundwater will also continue to impact the ability of the sewage network to operate.

The utterly repellent "cold" spell has taken the monthly total to 70.4mm, ensuring January goes down as the 5th consecutive wetter than average month 🤮

So many ridiuclously bone dry Januaries in recent years meaning there has been virtually no snow but now in the preposterous situation of getting above average precipitation and still next to nothing. It's beyond a joke.

Running 12-month total edging closer to 1000mm as well at 967.6mm - the highest since October 2010 - 613.4mm of which has fallen since the start of September. An utterly awful period of weather that just won't relent 🤢

A very dry month, especially in comparison with the rest of the UK and since today is also the last day of the month, our final totals for this month are unlikely to be much different from what is shown above.

This could have some very serious consequences for the SE of Scotland in terms of possible water shortages during the spring and summer if we don't start to get some serious rainfall here soon.

Since yesterday was the last day of the month, this means that yesterday will now go down in the final statistics as the joint wettest day of January at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Monthly Data

Final Total for January 2023:  42.6 mm (58.3% of 1991-2020 January average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 35.4 mm (54.7% of 1991-2020 January average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

The rest of the UK may well have been wetter than average during January and often substantially so in places but for here in  Edinburgh, it was a completely different story as January was actually a much drier than average month here, especially in terms of the actual rainfall amounts as we ended up with not much more than half of the 1991-2020 January average rainfall at both of those stations.

Furthermore, the number of rain days at both of those stations was also well below the 1991-2020 January average.

Seasonal Data

Total for this Winter so far:  141.4 mm (67.7% of 1991-2020 Winter average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 117.2 mm (63.3% of 1991-2020 Winter average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
Number of rain days during this Winter so far:  27 (72.8% of 1991-2020 Winter average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 25 (72.3% of 1991-2020 Winter average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
