This may well be the quickest start time on record for one of these threads, but it is raining here in Edinburgh just now and I am aware that not all of you go by the more official 09:00 UTC start time for each observation day as I do.

This winter started off on a very cold note with December 2022 ending up being colder than average overall despite a much milder second half of the month.

Whilst that was all happening, the winter also started off on a very dry note and it had looked for quite a while as though last month was going to be quite substantially drier than average. As the temperature went up though, it also got a lot wetter and as it turned out, December 2022 has actually ended up being wetter than average overall.

As we are currently still in that much wetter spell of weather, I thought that this would be a good time to start this thread so that anyone who want to report any recorded rainfall for this month can now do so here.

While Scotland is experiencing floods from immediate run-offs, the water table in the south is getting ominously close to the surface.

https://sites.google.com/view/groundwatergraphs/home/groundwater-data/sussex/chilgrove-west-dean-to-east-dean-chilgrove

From a record low at Chilgrove near Chichester, 34.2m aod at the beginning of November, rising after a slight fallback, to 58.7m aod 21st Dec and now 71.2m aod yesterday 2nd Jan. The level at which springs break out promiscuously at this site is 75m aod. With plenty of rain forecast for the Sussex Downs in the next 10 days this level should be reached in a week or so. Once it reaches this level, flooding is widespread and longlasting, with consequences from permanently flooded basements domestically to roads in the normally dry valleys closed for weeks.

But at least it assures our water supply for next summer.

Much more persistent and heavy rain today than forecast - yesterday was meant to be the wet day with only the odd shower this morning, but the sky is black as night currently.

Our local river has flooded in several places, two roads are flooding, one must be at least 4ft under water, stretches are Blatchbridge and Feltham plus the river at Wallbridge is now over the banks and on the road. Probably further down steam, being lower the river has probably flooded but I've not been down there to see. A lot of water, luckily the rain has ceased so should drop during the night. My total reading for the month has topped 94.9mm, Just a few showers last evening.
