I am not sure how they got 37.3 because the mean of the stations was 37.2C and then it is supposed to be revised downwards by 0.2C isn't it?

Mean has also been updated on the website to 28.1C, as you calculated.

Is that a record for all three then?

That minimum, if it is retained, beats the highest 2 I can see in the series by 0.1C: 29/7/1948 and 11/8/1997 - 

unless anyone is aware of other higher values- I checked 2018,2006,2003, 1995, 1983, 1976, 1975 (3rd I think with 18.5 on 5th)

Another great analysis Rob; thanks. Didn't think of 2016 but I remember now that was our Sports Day- absolutely blistering evening.

Yestrday's provisional CET max was 37.3C and (apart from yesterday's 34.8) beat the previous record max of 34.2 by over 3C

In stats terms that is just about 1 sigma (1 standard deviation) more than the previous outlier (from about 4 to 5)

In terms of return periods that is a huge difference and despite the dire forecasts of climate change I doubt there will be anything to match this CET max for a very long time to come (probably not in many of our lifetimes)

There may well be more regional records broken but the CET covers such a broad swathe of the country

July 19 2016 was a 30.9 CET max - the real heat was confined to the SE with Wisley hitting 36.4C.

Yes as I just noted in another thread, that CET max would have been a new UK temperature record on its own before 2003!

Edit: also interesting that 19th July was the heat peak in 2006 as well.

CET prov (hopefully not too prov now they've changed the system) 18.2°C so back a pip.

This month has been quite remarkable locally.

I have not recorded a maximum temperature below 21°C and that temperature was on the first. It was 22.9°C on 5th and every other day has been >23°C. Yesterday was the first day < 25°C since the 7th. There have been 8 days of 27°C or more.The first week had fairly cool nights but the rest have been above average. Highest max however was a (comparatively) modest 33.1°C.

I always look out for Arty on the daily CC and monthly rainfall threads, but I have also just noticed he has posted anything on either or those two threads either in recent days that I know of.

Hopefully, he will just be enjoying a well deserved break and is perfectly OK.

If that is the case, I'm sure that he will be back before too long, all nice and refreshed from that (albeit, with him making fewer of his famous typos as a result).

Another 0.1C would put us in the top 10 Julys, joint 10th with 1757 and 1808. A 0.2C increase would tie us with 1976 (don't tell GB News!)

I see that since the Hadley figures were revised, July 2006 has gone up to 19.8C. It used to be 19.7C.

Kent & East Anglia cannot possibly be considered 'Central England' so what happens there is immaterial as regards the CET. And before anyone say it I don't think Stonyhurst should be considered a CET station. I believe that Manchester Ringway (now Manchester Airport) used to be the northern limit and even that was pushing it. But what some people seem to forget is that the 3 stations in themselves aren't intended to be representative of central England as such, rather they form the perimeter of said area and their average is considered to be consistent within that area.
