Ah, thanks. Definitely a new fissure so given its alignment. Also seems to be in a location where fresh lava flow will not threaten to close off main road along the south coast as was much feared during the first eruption. Though these are very much early days yet.

Nice drone image of the new opening in that VolcanoCafe link.

I video captured the the moment the fissure opened from one of the MDL cams while it is still available and will post up here later, just so as to keep for posterity. The thing about these sort of eruptions is that the can last only a few hours or days,, or could go on for months!

Came across these lads last night who got some great close up footage of the new eruption.

A channel worth subscribing to I reckon.

I knew it wouldn't be long before the guy from Reykjavik Grapevine was on the case. Amazing footage here!

And the sheer scale of the lava in the video is impressive. This was 6 hours after it started.

Looking at the latest live footage, it would seem that things are on the wane again. Certainly the eruptive area seems to be much more contracted compared to yesterday at least.

2 min long live cam video capture (speeded up x2) showing the moment when the fissure erupted. No time stamp on that particular MLD feed unfortunately but time of eruption is said to have been around 1.15pm GMT.

GeologyHub has a nice analysis up of the current eruption.

I
I find it hard to believe though that the amount of lava being spewed is greater than that of last year's event (at least at the start of it) which to me, was far more impressive in scale.

I think the scale of the eruption is masked by the fact the vents are in the middle of a lava lake of sorts.

On a unrelated note the Chiles-Cerro Negro complex on the Columbia-Ecuador border has been showing increasing signs of probable magmatic activity in recent months. Although an eruption there is by no means imminent(and maybe not even likely), due to the magnitude, location and potential it is well worth keeping an eye on.

Very poor views on the lives cams the last couple of days owing to low cloud and perpetual misty drizzle. The North Atlantic weather.. you just can't beat it.

"The world's largest active volcano, Hawaii's Mauna Loa, is erupting for the first time in almost 40 years. ...Mauna Loa last erupted in March and April of 1984, sending lava flows within 5 miles (8km) of the city of Hilo.

The latest eruption began on Sunday night at Moku'āweoweo, the volcano's summit caldera. Calderas are hollows that form beneath the summit at the end of an eruption."
