Mild and very windy, rain is still far to the west but there may be an hour or two as cooler weather arrives.

Looks like a proper squall line has developed especially across the Midlands. Not seen one of these for a while!

A thoroughly wet and miserable start to today here in Edinburgh.

It's been a long time since I was last able to say that because it has hardly ever rained here recently, but this does at least mean that some actual weather is finally happening here, at long last (which is not something which happens very often here in Edinburgh).

As at 7am this morning, a total of 5.2 mm of rain had been recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank since 10am BST (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning along with 4.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, and 9.9 mm at Swanston in the south of Edinburgh (according to the Met Office WOW site) and it is still raining quite heavily as I write.

Last night was cooler than of late with an overnight minimum temperature of 10.1ºC at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 10.5ºC at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was around 10ºC here in Edinburgh.

Wet, windy and autumnal. But very non-2021 too today. Why? Because, for once, we have an actual cold front passing though the country from West to East and clearing to leave sunny spells and lower humidity.

Like the olden days: remember when this was the British weather archetype? The frontal system passage.

As expected, it is overcast and very windy with the first in-your-face southerly gale of the Autumn season, but not that much rain with 2.8 mm so far.

17.3 C & 93% H, showing how I'm still on this side of the cold front.

That squall line hit us in the middle of the night, with our guttering quickly overwhelmed. Lasted a few minutes, then we all went back to sleep.

Speaking to a few people from further south in work this morning, and it seems the Squall line was perhaps a bit more energetic for them, with more of a storm feel about it as it passed.

The rain is now clearing away from here although it is still overcast at the monent.

What is noticable though is the drop of the temperature which is now only around 9ºC here in Edinburgh as at 11am this morning.

That is about 10ºC down on where it was at this time yesterday and all of a sudden, it has now gone from being too warm for this time of the year to all of a sudden, being a bit cold for this time of the year, given that this is still only the end of September.

That is quite a massive difference from what we have been seeing recently. The temperature has even dropped to below last night's offically recorded minimum value and is still dropping as I write.

Good sunny spells and only scattered cumulus, even the current 19.1 C is feeling pleasantly warm in the sunshine despite the mod W breeze.

PS: Ended up with 4.8 mm of rain but is all drying up quickly.

Bit late this - sorry. I went to my 10am exercise class this morning. On arrival found myself parking in conditions which can only be described as "Biblical" and torrential. I have seldom seen such a downpour anywhere in the world - it was like waves breaking on the car. Very squally too. Lasted about 10 minutes before easing.

I was at work when the squall came through and the sound of rain on the roof was deafening.  Sunny and breezy now.
