This month could break a new record for UK monthly temperature range. We've already seen a low of -23C recorded recently in Braemar on the morning of the 11th. By next weekend the weather is flipping to anomalous warmth. The BBC weather for the week ahead has the following temperatures forecast for London from the 20th-22nd:

20th: 16C

21st: 16C

22nd: 15C

It's a week away yet, but there does seem to be a good signal for spring-like warmth to develop. If the temperature reaches 17C somewhere next weekend, then that would mean a difference of 40C between the low and high temperatures in the UK for February 2021. Has such a large monthly range been recorded before?

Someone in the model output discussion thread predicted wild swings in temperature this month. It looks that they may turn out to be right!

Wow. 46.7C range. OK, I don't think we're going to beat that!

Related trivia: Braemar was both the hottest and coldest place in the UK in both September and October 2015.

Yes this must be a record range for the month of February. Just shows what an amplified jet stream can do.

I think that may beat Feb 1955 by a degree or so.

Same sort of thing being reported on Germany for Feb as well

Gottingen weather station has recorded a range of 41.9C between 14th and 21st Feb going from -23.9C to +18.1C in 7 days

Note this is just the one site not a range across the whole country

This February would still have a long way to go to beat the range of March 1965 ( -21.7 to +25.0ºC, a monthly range of 46.7ºC).

February 1897 had a range of 39.6 degrees in just NE Scotland with the region recording both the highest and lowest temperatures in the UK.

-21.7C at Braemar on the 4th to 17.9C at Aberdeen on the 22nd.

Nothing particularly high in this region this month to match that. 13.9C at Lossiemouth is the highest I've seen.
