First of all, I would like to know if anyone knows what has happened to weathercast.co.uk which up until now, has been a very important place for me to get the various pieces of data for three different stations here in Edinburgh (Edinburgh Airport, Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh), which I use to build up the information which I then post to various threads such as the daily CC threads, the monthly PW threads and the various statistics threads which I always start for each month, season or year at the appropriate times.

I know that this isn't something which just affects me because I have seen various posts on other threads such as the monthly CET threads which contain links that point to some sort of data from weathercast. Up until the early hours of this morning, everything was still working fine with that but unfortunately, I am now finding that whenever I try to access that data for any of my three local stations, I just get redirected to another site at weatherpro.com. This means that I no longer have any access to this very important data. It seems as though Meteogroup (which owns that site) have decided to get rid of weathercast altogether but what is even more weird is that when you try to go to Meteogroup's home page, you then get redirected to another site at dtn.com.

Has Meteogroup been bought out by another company? That is important as well because it is Meteogroup who the BBC get most of their weather data from and so, I'm not sure what impact these changes will have on that. It is clear though, that something fishy is going on here and it would be nice to be able to get to the bottom of that.

In addition to that, the rainfall totals section of SEPA's website has been out of action since they had their big cyber attack just before Christmas and when you try to go there now, you just get a message saying that the service is temporarily unavailable. For the last few years, I have relied on weathercast and SEPA for the most up to date rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh with one of those sites acting as a backup just in case the other one goes down. Now that we have lost access to the data for both of those sites, I now no longer have any means of getting any up to date rainfall data for those two stations (I could go to somewhere like wunderground, but that only really gives the data for individual PWSs which are not going to be as reliable as the more official stations which are managed by the Met Office (Edinburgh Airport is covered at Wunderground, but no rainfall data ever comes from there these days).

In the meantime, I can get enough info from the latest SYNOP data at sites such as Meteomanz and weatherobs for reporting other.components of the weather such as the temperatures and even the sunshine totals. There is also the Met Office's WOW site from which I am able to get the sunshine totals for the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. However, that is quite often well out of date and in any case, that site doesn't give us all  of the data for these stations which I like to report. It doesn't for example, give us the sunshine totals for Edinburgh Gogarbank.

I must add now that without any access to this important data, I cannot continue to make the contributions to this forum which I have been able to make in terms of reporting the actual data for what is happening here in Edinburgh. I know that there is a lnumber of people on this forum who own and run their own weather stations. However, not everyone is able to do that for those of us who can't, access to this sort of data is a massive god-send for those of us who have an avid interest in the weather and who just want to be able to report what is happening in their area in the best way possible. Indeed, even those who do own and run their own weather stations will still want to check the official data for other nearby Met Office managed sites in order to ensure that their own stations are working as accurately as possible so when that data just suddenly isn't available any more, this can be very frustrating for quite a lot of people.

For that reason, I would like to put this out to the other members of this forum, just to see if anyone rlse has found themselves in this position.

Yes this seems to have happened yesterday

I used this for my data from my local area using the Kew Gardens reporting site which showed the past few days weather data at 1 hourly intervals

After a bit of digging around and knowing the site's WMO number (99095) I managed to find the same data again but only in Dutch using:

http://www.meteoservices.be/be/home/weer/weer-wereldwijd/waarnemingen/obsid/99095.html

might be worth  try in your case too

I haven't found an Eglish version yet !

If you search for weathercast on Google and click on the "World Weather" option, then Weather Stations when the page has loaded, rather than using a pre-existing bookmark, then you probably find the information you are looking for. I'm not sure if that will change shortly but at the time of writing the information is still on the site.

The Weathercast bookmarks I have still seem to work fine, eg Heathrow latest obs are here: http://www.weathercast.co.uk/world-weather/weather-stations/obsid/3772.html

Martin: Kew Gardens data is here (although it is missing some from a few days ago)  http://www.weathercast.co.uk/world-weather/weather-stations/obsid/99095.html

And the "next stations" map at the bottom still works for finding nearby locations.

All looks totally unchanged to me. What are people missing?

Thanks for that. It turns out from that, I am now able to get the same information from there which I used to get from weathercast for all of my three local stations, just by changing the WMO number part of the URL to the one for tht station which I want to get that data from. This is important because I am in the process of creating my own app for automating the process of grabbing that data and then turning it into the format which it needs to be in so that I can then report that here. Just by changing the URL in my app though, that still works nicely.

Furthermore, Google Chrome is capable these days of translating anything which is in a foreign language into English, so I have no problems with that.

What exactly are people missing with Weathercast? The station data pages seem exactly the same to me and are still updating hourly as usual.

Yes, the direct links still work currently. However if you navigate directly to weathercast.co.uk it now redirects you to weatherpro.com which does not have links to these data.

Oh I see. I never went via the homepage.

There seem to be various cloned versions of those pages in different European languages as others have posted above. Hopefully they won't all disappear as they are great for tracking heatwaves etc!

Ogimet is another good site for hourly data although the list of stations is not as big as Weathercast.

That still works for Heathrow, but not for any of my three local stations here in Edinburgh. However, I have now solved this issue be using the alternative URL for that.

Even though thweathercast might still be available for Heathrow just now though, my hunch is that it probably won't for much longer so if I was you, I would probably look into using that alternative URL as a backup.

Just on another side note, do you or anyone else have any latest updates on how long, SEPA is likely to remain off-line in terms of being able to get any rainfall data from their site?

That is getting to be quite a while now after all.

I suspect it may be quite a while yet unfortunately John due to the ransomware attack. I suspect they will probably have a bit of work to do to ensure their systems are secure before putting the data back online.

Those are the same links which I had bookmarked all along, but all of them are now just redirecting me to weatherpro.com.

The link to the Kew Gardens data from weathercast is doing the same thing for me and since my last post here, even the link to the data for Heathrow has started to do the very same thing.

I have used Google Chrome, Chromium (the open-source version of Google Chrome which can be used on Linux) and Firefox, but the result is still the same with all of them.

something really weird going on here

This Weatherpro page almost looks like a virus - and the page back key isn't working either

My Kew link works fine on my bookmarks but when copied across to TWO in my post it redirects to weatherpro

Try Just Googling "WMO 99180" direct in a browser and then follow the meteoservices.be link and it should be OK to Edinburgh and you can then bookmark that and it still OK

Need a tech to explain what is happening
