We are approaching a situation where countries such as NZ have essentially eradicated the virus. They are living with full day to day freedoms. Meanwhile, we are in lockdown and staring down the barrel of months if not longer with at least some forms of restriction on life - contact, jobs, schooling, gatherings.

Just contemplate that: one government's decisions has given their population normality; while we will be seeing a severe limiting of our lives for some time. That's a pretty big contrast in nature and quality of life. Sobering.

I'd be the first   to say the Govt were tardy to start taking measures, and in particular not halting  travel from  Italy,  but these measures are a huge deal for the UK, economically and culturally.  Even   if they had acted earlier I very much doubt we would be on the cusp of eradicating Coronavirus at this point - by dint of our hugely  dense conurbations

You aren't comparing like with like.   NZ is a backwater compared to the UK and has a tiny population compared to us.  We  have  external connections  right across Europe, into the Americas and  Commonwealth countries.  You only have to glance at the air traffic in normal times to see how hugely busy this interchange is.  Severing those cannot be done on a whim and until you do that anything you do internally is negated.

I don't agree. Greece, SK, Aus, NZ - all very different types of country. And they've all managed this. Most countries had already cut flights so that it would not have been hard to cut flights into the UK. The external connections were gone. We were the outlier.

Thats not true - From Tuesday, some non-essential business, healthcare and education activity will be able to resume. Most people will still be required to remain at home at all times and avoid all social interactions.

NZ people are sensitive about entry of unwanted organisms (when I visited, the man in front at immigration was mad to remove his boots and scrub the soles clean of dirt) so isolation for CV purposes must have been second nature.

In this context, I was interested to hear that South Africa is VERY carefully monitoring long-distance lorry drivers and we have a few of those, on account of SA's experience with the spread of a  previous virus, HIV.

I was unconvinced by Boris' speech today; it seemed to be in the nature of a holding operation and he himself didn't seem to be totally on top of things. No apology of course for being late to the party back in March. Radio Sussex had a caller who considered it statesmanlike and masterful, not to say Churchillian. I nearly threw the radio out of the window but remembered that the BBC currently has to suck up to the Tory party to avoid being dismembered.

We were driving south in France the morning that they reached that part and I almost had to stop the car from laughing so much.

This account by a police officer from the first article has me incredulous; I doubt this is scrotes from a council estate visiting Malham Cove:

She said one group had spat on the ground in front of her, another man had hurled abuse at her in front of his children, and she had to break-up one group who decided to have a barbecue on parched ground at the top of Malham Cove.

Test, trace, and isolate for any case detected. No need to lock themselves away for ever.
