We have just had a very dry winter in this part of the world, but the models are now pointing towards a more unsettled start to the spring which will therefore, be a bit wetter as a result if that ends up being correct. If that happens, this thread will be a bit busier than of late and it may well be that some of you will already have something to report for this month in terms of rainfall.

That isn't yet the case for here but regardless of what happens during this month in terms of rainfall, this is the very place to report that.

In the end, a total of 0.4 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 1.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that though, a total of 0.6 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 2.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 1.0 mm, the total for this spring so far to 1.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 31.8 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 3.6 mm, the total for this spring so far to 3.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 34.4 mm as at 8am this morning.

According to the latest model output, the first half of this month is particular, is forecast to be a lot more unsettled and therefore, much wetter than of late. Whilst the shorter term models are currently seeing no signs of that more unsettled weather ending any time some, there are some indications amongst a few of the longer term models that the second half of this month could then see a return to drier and more settled conditions.

Since this is one of our wettest months of the year on average, there is every chance that this could end up being our first wetter than average month for a while if the models are correct. However, it is worth noting that we have been here many times during the last several months only for the models to then back away from that more unsettled outlook with any unsettled spells which have occurred then being only brief before we have then returned to high pressure and drier weather.

As a result, my hunch is to say that it won't be as unsettled during this month as what the models are suggesting and although I think it will be wetter than anything which we saw during the winter, our rainfall totals will probably once again, end up being no more than around average in these parts.

In the end, a total of 7.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 7.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which makes yesterday, the wettest day of the year so far at both of those stations.

In addition to that though, a total of 2.4 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 13.2 mm, the total for this spring so far to 13.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 44.0 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 15.2 mm, the total for this spring so far to 15.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 46.0 mm as at 8am this morning.

This is now turning out to be a rather wet start to both this month and this spring, which is much wetter than what we have been used to recently. The result of this is that although we are only just over three days into this month (and this spring), there has already been more rain during this period than what there was during the entire month of January at both of those stations and almost as much rain at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh than what there was during the entire month of February.

What is even remarkable is that this is happening at the beginning of what would normally be our driest season of the year on average with that following on from a very dry winter (normally, the winter would be about the wettest season of the year on average). Having said that though, we can't also forget that March was also a very wet month during last year and that the ongoing rainfall deficit which has been building up since before last summer, has to be made up at some point in time.

Fast on track to having yet another wetter than average month down here.
If March continues at this rate then 4/5 of the last months will have seen above average rainfall.

In the end, a total of 2.0 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 1.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that though, a total of 7.4 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 7.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This already mades today the second wettest day of this year so far at both of those stations and since there has been some further rain since 8am this morning, those are unlikely to be the final totals for today.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 22.6 mm, the total for this spring so far to 22.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 55.4 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 24.0 mm, the total for this spring so far to 24.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 54.8 mm as at 8am this morning.

This may well still only be the first week of this month, but we are already at the point in time where just another 4 official rain days need to occur between now and the end of this month at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in order for this month to then go down as being wetter than average overall at that station in terms of the number of official rain days, so this has been a thoroughly wet start to both this month and this spring so far.

Does anybody know why the 1961-90 period in the UK was much drier then the 1981-2010 period?
