We've now just entered the last week of the meteorological winter although to be honest, this so-called "winter" went down the toilet pan quite a while ago.

At the moment, the skies are fairly clear here in Edinburgh with small amounts of cloud around. However, it is obviously a different story not too far away from here as we have quite a contrast in the temperatures just now across my three local stations.

Those clear skies have resulted in the temperatures continuing to drop away a bit towards the city centre (although it still isn't the least bit cold), whereas it is obviously much cloudier in the western outskirts of the city where the temperature is now refusing to drop as a result.

That is the opposite way around from what you would normally expect due to the urban island effect, given that Edinburgh is a city (albeit, only a fairly small city in terms of its size and population).

The end result of this is that the temperature at midnight was 9.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 10°C at Edinburgh Airport, but just 7.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

EDIT:

Looks like I've spoken too soon, as the temperature at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has now shot back up to 10.4°C as at 1am this morning, this returning us to that ultimate winter nightmare of night-time double figures temperatures once again.

Yet another day has started off on a grey and rather boring note with nothing which is even remotely interesting in terms of our weather, actually happening.

The wind has picked up a bit though, and was gusting up to 28.6mph from the SSW at Edinburgh Gogarbank at 8am this morning.

Once again, the temperatures during the night refused to drop and so, our frost-free hell goes on. In addition to that, it is already ridiculously warm for this time of the year.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 9.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 7°C at Edinburgh Airport and 7.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was already up at 12.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 12°C at Edinburgh Airport and 12.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh

The murky misty conditions of earlier on this morning is slowly lifting but cloud base still low enough to lop off anything higher than 100 ft asl, thus making the current 7 c & 95% h feel damp & clammy but winds are very light.

Meanwhile, the borefest here in Edinburgh goes on as we have had to put up with almost constantly grey skies throughout this morning with only a few fleeting glimpses of the Sun.

The result of this is that a total of just 12 minutes of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

In addition to that, it is also very windy with maximum wind gusts at Edinburgh gogarbank of up to 31.1mph from the SSW as at 12 noon.

Despite the lack of sunshine in these parts though, it remains exceptionally warm for the time of year and the temperature at 12 noon was now up to 13.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 14°C at Edinburgh Airport and 14.5°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The Sun gradually came out a bit more as the afternoon wore on, but not to the same extent as what we saw yesterday and so, a total of just 54 minutes of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 4pm this afternoon.

However, today has ended up being even warmer than yesterday and so, today's maximum temperature was 16.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 16°C at Edinburgh Airport and 15.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which meakes today, the warmest day of both this year and this winter so far at all three of my local stations..

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 14.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 15°C at Edinburgh Airport and 14.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

A calm day with occasional bright spells and fog patches.

A spell of sunshine around 4pm allowed the temperature to climb briefly to 11.4c.

As soon as the mist rolled back in a 3 degree fall of temperature was observed in 20 minutes.

Currently foggy.

7.8c / RH 94%.

Awful with little sunshine, a stiff wind and temperature is rising in the dark to reach a peak of 12.9C currently. Beyond a joke

Another stunning day. Went walking in the Peak District and barely a cloud in the sky. Wore a t-shirt most of the way round, even out of the sun it was still humid feeling. This time last year there was brutally cold wind chills up there!

It all looks fairly clear just now but it remains very warm for the time of year.

However, a cloudy end to today means that a total of just 54 minutes of sunshine was recorded for the whole of today at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 12.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 13°C at Edinburgh Airport and 12.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
