The final month of the meteorological winter (which is also the shortest month of the year) has just started off on a very cold and frosty note here in Edinburgh. There was a little bit of a blip for a while earlier on as the presence of more in the way of cloud caused the temperature to go back up a bit. This has meant that the temperatures aren't all that much lower just now than what they were during the early part of yesterday evening.

However, the skies are now much clearer once again. That has caused the temperatures to resume their downward trend which means that there is still the possibility that the temperature at Edinburgh Airport in particular, could yet get all the way down to minus double digits or at least get very close to that.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was -6.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -7°C at Edinburgh Airport and -4.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Practically nothing from showers here around dawn, they did lift the temperature from -6.5 to near freezing.

I see BBC is in London disaster mode with 3cm of wet snow chaos.

The M4 did look like it might have been slightly slushy at 4am to be fair.

As for right now, the Sun is shining here in Edinburgh once again after yet another very cold and frosty night.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was -7.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -9°C at Edinburgh Airport and -6.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This makes last night, the coldest night of the winter so far at all three of my local stations.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8am this morning was -6.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, -7°C at Edinburgh Airport and -5.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Cloudy and damp. Sugar icing cover on prone areas over night. Anything that falls now is likely to be wet rather than white which should make it easier for it to turn up and deliver.

Cold, wet, raining here , horrible! I see there are a few cms on the higher ground in the SW and other favoured areas which is nice. The much berated Met office got it about right I would say.

Unbroken overcast, calm, sometimes drizzle sometimes light snow.

1.9*C (DP 1.1*C) after a minimum of 0.3*C at 11.45pm.

94%RH; 983.6mb rising.

The temperature has risen slowly since last night, and the 1-2cm of lying snow is turning wet and slushy. Yuk.  In the middle of this week I was tempted to post in the Short Term Snow Prospects thread that I was expecting a slushfest, and it looks as though my expectation was accurate.  And if it doesn't freeze tonight, it looks as though it will on Saturday night, so that will be tricky.

Better go and clear the slush off the car before it freezes.
