well the GEFS now take us out to Feb 14 with no sign of anything interesting. Yes we could end up with something in late Feb but that is very much an outside bet at this stage. I would put money on the Feb CET being at least 1C above average to round off a notably mild winter that has made mugs out of long range forecasters everywhere.

Well, I wasn't expecting that!!

I have just woke up a short time ago, and noticed that we at long, long last have a dusting of snow on the ground here in the north of Edinburgh which must have came about from a snow shower or a cluster of snow showers which moved through this area during the early hours of this morning.

Make no bones about it. This has still been a very poor winter for snow in this part of the world even with that. However, we can at least now say that this winter won't be completely snowless here as it had been until then which at least, is better than nothing at all.

Light snow, a couple of cm on all surfaces, temp. at -1.7 C.

Big surprise today. The most snow we have had for a long time. I'd say 3-4 inches. Sounds like we got lucky judging off other reports very nearby on here 

Incredibly frustrating here, but not a let down as snow was never forecast. Apart from on the crude 0.25 resolution GFS precipitation charts. They should be outlawed and never posted. If they are wrong at 6 hours, then what is the point. Also looks like GFS got the low track for tomorrow the most wrong, but obviously not a certainty until tomorrow, but it has backtracked the most.

Heavy snow as the trough sinks South, not much more to come.

Recent showers of sleet with occasional snowflakes mixed in here at Exeter Quay. BUT what's frustrating is that a few miles away over small hills - the snow has settled giving a light dusting over hills as you can see in below pics - taken looking westwards and behind that hill is Haldon Hill and behind that is a webcam of DARTMOOR in 2nd pic! Just shows you what a tiny bit of elevation does!?

Meanwhile Dartmoor has enjoyed a light covering!

Yesterday evening, the snow reverted to rain or sleet after an hour or so, but this morning we still have pretty much a full cover on the grass of a cm or so, albeit a rather tatty one. I think it's enough to meet the official definition of a day with snow lying: 50% or more of the ground covered at 9 am.

Just been for a walk. Most snow here since Jan 2010. Very chuffed, and very impressed with the performance of EURO4 and GFS. They got the streamer spot on.

Brilliant! Much less here, probably 2 inches without measuring! We really need a good westerly component here in Saddleworth to pick these events up I think. There's a blob coming in off the Irish Sea that looked promising but will almost certainly miss us now.

That fairly large blob of PPN moving in off the Irish Sea looks like it's heading straight for Manchester, although too far east to hit MBY at home.

I've got to travel to Rawtenstall this afternoon. Should be clear, but expecting some picturesque scenes and rubbish traffic.

My journey to work was slow and the roads were poor. I'd say there was about 3 inches of snow back home which I'm really happy with and is the most we have had for at least 3 years. My three year old has built his first snowman and is loving it! Sadly, I have to work. I would love a snow day.

I think it is going to miss Manchester to the SW - it may clip places like Altrincham, don't think it will reach the city centre. Very close call though and I could be wrong.

Looking promising-ish for MBY although I'm not there. Looks like it may go through the Wigan borough

The heavier snow last night seemed to track between the A570/M58/M6 and the M61. This one likewise.
