The winter borefest goes on here as it remains overcast with nothing which is even remotely interesting in terms of our weather, actually happening. It is still very windy with maximum wind gusts at Edinburgh Gogarbank getting up to 39.1mph from the WSW. However, the temperatures are refusing to drop as a result of there being too much cloud and far too much wind around.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 9.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 10°C at Edinburgh Airport and 10.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so it is very mild for this time of the year as this so-called "winter" continues to go down the tubes.

Yet another dull, dreary, depressing and soul destroying start to yet another weekend as our winter borefest and snowless hell goes on.

There was a little bit of rain during the early hours of this morning but so far, a total of just 0.6 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with a rather measly 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 9am this morning, as we continue to stumble towards our driest January on record with hardly any rain being recorded here during this entire month which we are now coming towards the end of.

However and as per usual for this winter, nothing which is even remotely interesting in terms of our weather is actually happening as we reamin within the midst of yet another frost-free hell.

It is still mild here for the time of year, and it is still windy with the wind at Edinburgh Gogarbank gusting up to 28.6mph from the SW as at 9am this morning.

Last night's overnight minimum temperature was 8.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 9.1°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 9am this morning was 9.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 9.3°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Not much has changed since earlier on except that we had a little bit of rain just after I posted my last report on this thread which has slightly increased today's rainfall so far as at 12 noon to 1.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank (where today will therefore, go down as only the third official rain day of this month as a result) and 0.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Apart from that though, we still have the same old constant grey skies as before and so, nothing in the way of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

It's not quite as windy as it was earlier on, but it is still mild and the temperature at 12 noon was 9.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 9°C at Edinburgh Airport and 9.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

There was a spell of rain here during this afternoon which has now cleared away, and which has now increased today's rainfall total so far as at 4pm this afternoon to 2.2 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank (which makes today the wettest day of this month so far at that station) and 1.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today will now go down as only the third official rain day of this month at both of those stations.

Although that rain has cleared away, this didn't happen quickly enough to allow us see any brightness which means that in the end, nothing in the way of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank. That makes today the 9th completely sunless day of this month, the 21st sunless day of this winter and the 9th sunless day of this year.

Today's maximum temperature was 9.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 10°C at Edinburgh Airport and 10.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh with those values all being recorded during the early hours of this morning.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 8.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

After today turned out more brighter than I thought, it clouded over in the evening and the rain belt has arrived here . . . or at least what's left of it and there is surprisingly little wind to go with it. Only 0.6 mm in all today.

8.5 c & 93% h under a light south west breeze (probably where I'm sheltered by the built up hills). Today's max is 9.1 at 12 pm.

I'm hoping there'll be blustery showers tonight to deter the local night club revellers.

I don't think that any low sunshine records will be broken here because at Edinburgh Gogarbank, we actually only need to get at least another 2.7 hours of sunshine in total during the last 5 days of this month in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average overall. However, there may well be some low sunshine records broken elsewhere in the UK for this month.

One thing which is sure though, is that I think that this month will go down as being at the very least, one of the driest Januarys on record in this part of the world.

That is despite the fact that just a short time ago, we had another spell of rain which has increased today's rainfall total so far to 2.6 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8pm this evening, and 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at that same time. This means that today will now go down as the wettest day of this month so far at both of those stations, although I don't think that this will be enough to prevent this month from being one of our driest Januarys on record.

The reason why I say that is because back in the spring of 2017, we had our driest April on record with just around 3.6 mm of rain being recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank during that month along with 4.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. However, that happened during what is normally one of the driest periods of the year on average anyway.

Yet this month is statistically one of our wettest periods of the year on average due to the fact that we would normally expect the jet stream to be at it strongest at around this time. Yet, the rainfall totals which I am reporting for this month over on the PW thread are not all that much more than what we had at the very same stage of that really dry April which we had back in 2017 so when you add those two things together, this month surely at the very least, has to be a contender for our driest January on record.

This evening's rain is clearing away though with the temperature gradually dropping all the time. At this stage, it still isn't the least bit cold here, but it is nowhere near as mild now as what it was at this time last night.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 9pm tonight was 5.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 5.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
