Glorious weather here today. We've just reached the time of year when you can start to feel the warmth from the sun. Still time for winter to bite but it won't be long before I fire up my lawnmower.

i think cold snaps rather than spell is the form horse IMO with any HLB unlikely for our neck of the woods. An awful winter thus far devoid of any interesting weather of note, maybe spring will bring some actual weather. 😂😂

I was going to tidy up the garden and cut the lawn as tight as possible in the anticipation of the snow arriving with this bitter easterly at the end of the week😒

But the very cold weather been pushed back to Feb now.....then?

For now.

Give it a bit longer and the cold will be showing for June-August. And the models will be spot on then.

Well exactly a week ago I posted on the MOD thread that the 20th wold be key and if it wasn't nailed on then we would find people looking for the pot of gold in February and it would soon need something like the very end of last Feb to make this winter of any note. And that's where we are now. It will be cold but probably just regular winter fayre which will be what some will say was all they were expecting.

I think you would be locked up around here if anyone saw you mowing your lawn in mid-January.

Yes so my moan here tonight is the fact it was 6c around Tiverton and I saw the gritters out! - Got back to Exeter 6.5c! South Molton was cooler at 5c but seriously...? To seeing gritters out in at night where we are in daytime average temperatures in January is crazy!! Gritters are mean to come out when it's freezing or below not 5-6c above. Frost was never forecast anyway! What's even more embarrassing is that some roads have put out 'ice' signs when temperatures are still 6c. I mean seriously this winter is becoming a JOKE!

This winter has been so far nothing but a joke.Only snow i have seen was end of November during the first easterly outbreak, the one that actually made it.Since then it felt like chasing 10 day charts showing day after tomorrow scenarios that never ever verify.

Still needs cutting here every few weeks ,despite the fact we were all supposed to be in bitter easterlies by now according to the seasonal models

To be fair Tally there was a widespread ground frost across the West Country last night, as a glance here will tell you: http://www.met.rdg.ac.uk/~brugge/amextremes.html

So icy roads were indeed a risk.

I did just that yesterday and gave the lawn the first trim of the year. The grass was already becoming thick and lush under winter sunshine and it was just to keep my petrol mower lubricated anyway.

I have to say my confidence in model output post +120 alongside the MetO updates has reached an all time low, both have been appalling and highlight perfectly why for our neck of the woods neither man nor machine can forecast beyond +120.

I Find model output usually very accurate down here, even out in FI range: it never shows snow and we never get any

I said ground frost. The ground temperature can be 6 or 7 degrees below the air temp at this time of year. So yes, if the air temperature reached 1.8C then icy roads are definitely likely.
