This seems to be mainly the eastern side but exceptional totals already and more expected.
Our own persistent mild(ish) High pressure is directing cold air into the mix

Mainly the eastern side as you say. Take a look at some of the webcams from the Three Valleys - conditions are pants at the moment.

I am going to Courmayer on the 16th February and seriously worried. They are expecting 4 inches this week in western Alps otherwise daffodil picking would be a serious option.

Looking at the charts my guess is no major snow storms heading in that direction over the next `10 days. My guess is that it will be snowy during my week so again not much in the way of skiing but it would be fun driving.

For the first year ever (for the last 15 years or so) I have not yet put on my winter tyres and frankly am not getting the urge to do so either.

Great thread Colin. I've seen some vide clips of 10 feet plus of snow in a single fall and they've had at least 3 of those.

Not surprisingly avalanche warnings are in place - They've had mega falls.

This pic is one example - taken yesterday apparently.

You can get an idea of the depth of that quite easily. That's over 10 feet of snow.

It would be great if just once the UK could join in the monster snowfalls that eastern and southern Europe have been subjected to in recent years.

There's no particular reason it can't happen here, except that the areas in Europe worst affected are quite high up so will tend to get heavier precipitation of whatever kind.

Most of the UK can be comfortably cold enough for substantial snow to fall for many hours if conditions conspire.

Difference between the records from Dean Prior and Huntingdon Warren is altitude - the former at 100m asl. the latter at 467m. asl, so Dean Prior counts as a lowland site but not Huntingdon Warren.

There is an unofficial record of 200cm level snow from the southern edge of Dartmoor on the same date.

I thought 500m was the cut-off between lowland and mountain sites, as far as the Met is concerned?

Up to you whether hills count as lowland - I think they don't because if there is a forecast of 'hill snow' I'd expect the Peak District, for instance to be covered, and most of the peak is below 500m (Kinder Scout excepted)

Deepest ever lying level snow for a lowland site was Tredegar in South Wales back in 1963 with 165cm - this was cummalative though rather than one from a single snow storm.
Currently living at roughly 65m asl North of Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Formerly of, Birdlip, highest village in the Cotswolds and snow heaven in winter; Hawkinge in Kent - roof of the South downs and Isles of Scilly, paradise in the UK.
