Happy New Year to everyone at TWO.

According to Alex Deakin on the most recent Week Ahead forecast on the Met Office's main YouTube channel, the skies were supposed to have been a lot clearer by now with the temperatures dropping as a result.

At the moment, it looks as though the skies are starting to clear, but it still remains rather cloudy with the temperatures still refusing to drop as a result of there being too much cloud and far too much wind around.

It is also still very windy as well with maximum gusts leading up to midnight, getting up to 41.6mph from the west at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was still up at around 11°C.

Min 7.1C, currently 8.0C.
Cloud now breaking as the cold front passes through.
Reached 8.3C at 8.12 which I'm sure will be the max temp for the day.
Certainly looking forward to some fine winter sunshine to welcome the New Year in!

The sky is now much clearer and the Sun is now shining here in Edinburgh. The wind has now died down by quite a lot, and the temperature has dropped to around 2°C although our frost-free hell goes on.

The sun is out! Was starting to forget what the thing looks like. The 9 c & 83% h felt springlike mild in calm air when I popped out to put rubbish in the bin. Also the clamminess is gone where after 5 days of recording 0.2 mm through condensation (1 mm in all)  only, the rain gauge is reading 0.0 mm this morning.

Horrific start to 2019 with a return of the worst winter weather imaginable. Sunless, drizzly, windy and 3.9C which is lower than it was during the night. VILE.

New Year's Day has to be one of the worst days for weather in the entire year.  Six of the past 12 have recorded zero sunshine including four consecutively from 2008 to 2011. Today looks like making that 7/13 and another had only 0.1 hours. Only one with snow (2010) in the past 16 years now which is dreadful.

There is a bit more in the way of cloud around, but also some clear sky with a total of 1.6 hours of sunshine being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

Meanwhile, the temperature is now up to around 7°C after having got down to a minimum of around 2°C. That was enough to make last night, the coldest night since the night of Christmas Eve going into Christmas Day, but it's still not all that cold for this time of year when you consider that we have now just entered what is supposed to be the coldest month of the year on average, statistically speaking.

This first afternoon of 2019 has brought more in the way of cloud although in the end, a total of 2.7 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank. With so much cloud around though, I wouldn't be surprised if this is enough to result in temperatures refusing to drop during tonight as per usual, as a result of there being too much cloud around.

Today's maximum temperature was around 7°C and at 4pm this afternoon, the temperature had dropped to around 4°C.

There is still some cloud around, but there is still enough clear sky around to allow the temperature to drop away. As a result of that, the temperature at 8pm this evening was already down to 0°C which brings us very close to getting our first official air frost of both this month and this year.
