First of all, I would like to thank Retron for starting these threads in my absence whilst I was on my Christmas break down in the Scottish Borders, and also to Caz for taking on that same role during last weekend.

As far as the weather is concerned though, disaster has struck once again as the temperature has shot up by a few degrees over the last few hours, thereby bringing us back to that nightmare scenario once again of double figures night-time temperatures in the middle of what is supposed to be our winter.

It is also cloudy and for the first time for quite a while, it has also started raining here in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, the temperature at midnight was 10.4°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank (where the temperature is now above yesterday's earlier reported maximum temperature), 10°C at Edinburgh Airport and  6.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

As has been the case for the past few days, it's colder down here than it is up there - although saying the word "cold" would be pushing it a bit, as it's 8.1C, cloudy with a gentle SW'ly breeze. At least it's dry!

Here in Edinburgh, our frost-free hell goes on.

The rain from earlier on has cleared away and the skies are a lot clearer now, but that didn't happen quickly enough to prevent a total of 4.0 mm of rain from being recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. This means that today will now go down as an official rain day at both of those stations.

It is also very windy with maximum wind gusts at Edinburgh Gogarbank reaching 41.6mph from the WSW as at 8am this morning.

After I submitted my initial report on this thread though, the temperature then continued to go up until they reached a peak of 12.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank (where today is already the mildest day of this complete non-event which is known as "winter" so far), 12°C at Edinburgh Airport and 12.0°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh and I have seen cooler nights than this, even in the middle of summer.

The temperatures have dropped back a bit since then, but only to 10.5°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 10°C at Edinburgh Airport and 10.7°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 8am this morning.

Sun glinting weakly through extensive high cloud, just enough to lift the gloom. It's also a rather mild but clammy-like 10.6 c & 89% h under calm winds, where there was enough overnight dew to tip the rain gauge to show 0.2 mm.

A mostly sunny morning means that a total of 1.4 hours of sunshine has been recorded for today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 12 noon.

The wind is beginning to die down as well, although the wind at 12 noon at Edinburgh Gogarbank was still gusting up to 40.4mph from the west.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 12 noon was 9.7°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 10°C at Edinburgh Airport and 9.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

An almost completely sunny afternoon means that in the end, a total of 4.3 hours of sunshine was recorded for today at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

Today's maximum temperatures were reached in the early hours of this morning which means that I have already reported these in my post on this thread from just after 8am this morning.

Since then, the temperatures have shown a slow and gradual drop and so, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was 8.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 8°C at Edinburgh Airport and 8.2°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which for all three of my local stations, is actually today's minimum temperature so far.

This is just typical!!

Yet again for the umpteenth time recently, it has clouded over and yet again, this has resulted in the temperatures refusing to drop as a result of there being too much cloud around.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 6.8°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 5°C at Edinburgh Airport and 6.4°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
