So GEFS forecasting  a major SSW event triggering over the Christmas period, wonder what that may mean for us 2nd half Jan and into Feb ? Not sure if that means a PV split ?

If SSW occurs, I would think any (low temperature) effect is likely to arrive about 11-15 days later

so if it happens over Christmas, would be looking at the 2nd week of Jan rather than 2nd half January

Agree, still a forecast but reasonable consensus, could be in for interesting times from mid Jan perhaps.

So now we wait for the wind reversal to happen and then for it to propagate down into the troposphere and see what effects it produces.

As you said in the MOD thread, this is potentially more significant as we're just approaching the peak of the northern hemisphere winter.

The first one is the actual position at 12z yesterday

If we look out to 5 days (i.e. 24 Dec) we see this

A significant change. We now have a reversal at 1hPa all the way from 60N to 90N. On the other hand there is strong positive zonal wind around 75-80N at 10hPA.

If that trend continues it would not be long before it reached 30hPa. After that we might start to see some impact on the troposphere and potentially the model output.

Typically it takes about two weeks from the midpoint of a SSW for any noticeable impact to be seen in the troposphere, although it can be quicker. The peak temperature at 10hPa over the Pole is projected to be around Boxing Day. 2 weeks after that would take us to 9/10 January. 

Currently the GFS only goes out to 5 January. So I am not at all surprised there is nothing doing in the models at present. Even when 9/10 Jan comes into range any fluctuations will likely just be noise initially given there is usually a lot of scatter at T384. So I think it will be at least another week before any consistent signs of a significant cold spell might start showing up in the GEFS. That is of course assuming that any blocking that may occur happens in the right place to affect the UK. It is possible we will see no impact at all in our neck of the woods.

Personally I am not going to get interested in what the models are showing until after Christmas.

Very interesting developments on the 06z GFS parallel run.

This upgraded GFS model has been consistently predicting a split in the polar vortex whereas the operational run has not generally shown a split.

The 06z once again shows a split taking place by 2 Jan

The really interesting bit is what happens next. We get a second warming event occurring over Siberia

We will have to wait and see if this happens and how high the temperatures get.

But if we do see a second warming then that is likely to finish off what is left of the PV.

I think mid Jan to end of Feb could see some very interesting synoptic patterns in the lower atmosphere over the mid latitudes.

The ECMWF is now predicting some seriously high figures for the zonal wind reversal. Latest chart from yesterday's 12z run shows a mean wind speed of -50m/s at 1 hPa at 70degrees N by 30 Dec

The average zonal wind speed shown in that chart between 50N and 80N at 1hPa is about -30m/s (-10 at 50N, -40 at 60N, -50 at 70N and -20 at 80N)

The chart linked below shows zonal mean wind speeds from Jan to Mar this year. You can see that in mid Feb the wind speed for 50-80N was between -20 and -30m/s.

So the forecast reversed zonal wind speeds at 1hPA that we are seeing now for the final couple of days of December are starting to look very similar to if not slightly more than what we saw back in mid February.

Back in February we did see wind speeds below -20m/s down as far as 7hPa. The forecast chart above shows that at 5hPA we have a mean speed of about -17m/s between 50N and 80N. So the forecast strength of the reversal below 1hPA is not yet as strong as in February but we have not yet reached the peak of the reversal in the forecast charts.

I seem to recall at leasr a couple of occasions during those few years when possible such events were discussed quite openly on here, but perhaps did not come to fruition.

You can the zonal winds on this chart. There were two reversals aligned with the two warming events. The second reversal almost got down as far as 10hPa and the first one was not far off either. This chart shows the mean of the zonal winds at 50-80N rather than the position at 60N. I think these were both minor warming events.
