In the end, a total of 6.0 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 4.0mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh making yesterday, the wettest day of the winter so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

However, today has been completely dry so far at both of those stations as at 8am this morning.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 17.0 mm, the total for this winter so far to 17.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 595.4 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 17.0 mm, the total for this winter so far to 17.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 580.4 mm as at 8am this morning.

In complete contrast to that and just to show what that increasingly large rainfall gap between here in the rest of the UK is like, a total of just 0.2 mm of rain was recorded for yesterday in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with just 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh with today remaining completely dry so far at both of those stations as at 12 noon.

That then takes this month's total so far as at 12 noon today to just 17.2 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and just 17.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, although even that is still fairly close to our average, given that we are still only just over a week into this month.

I wasn't sure where to post this because since the issue in question covers only a very small part of the UK, I didn't feel that it was worthwhile starting a new thread for that, so I have decided that this thread probably comes the closest to being the most relevant place for it.

Anyway, those of you who have been reading my reports on this thread will know that in this part of the world, we have not been getting as much rain as what the rest of the UK has been getting during this month, despite the fact that our rainfall totals during this month so far have been no worse than average. To that end, I have found SEPA's latest version of their water scarcity report for the east of Scotland which was released on 29 November 2018, and which can be read here.

November was a slightly wetter than average month here and because of that, groundwater levels have showed a little bit of a recovery here in the east of Scotland during that time. Since the autumn as a whole was drier than average though, the groundwater levels here remain at a very low level and although this hasn't been causing any problems for the public water supply, this has caused a few issues with a number of private water supplies according to that report which shows that large parts of the east of Scotland including here in Edinburgh, remain on a water scarcity alert as a result.

This report then goes on to tell us that the winter rainfall patterns will be crucial to how groundwater levels recover from here, as we will need to be seeing quite a lot of rainfall during this time in order for that to properly happen, If we were getting the same amount of rain here during this month so far as what the rest of the UK was getting, there would be no problems here because the rainfall deficit would be getting made up, and the resulting recovery in groundwater levels would be well underway because of that.

The fact that we are getting no more than average rainfall at the moment though means that this just isn't happening. The outlook on the report points to this winter being slightly wetter than average, but that is based on a scenario where the Atlantic jet stream is too powerful to allow the Scandinavian High to properly build. However, there are now some indications in the models that the Scandinavian High could actually be a bit stronger than anticipated especially if we get a SSW event at some time around Christmas in the way that the models are indicating just now and if that happens, the general outlook will then be drier overall than what was previously expected,.

This could then make for very worrying times ahead for this region in terms of those all important groundwater levels and so, I am hoping that people will bear this in mind and spare a thought for what is happening here, before they complain about getting too much rain in their own neck of the woods.

I am sure that many of you will have come across this site but for those of you who haven't, that site is run by Hadley which is the same section within the Met Office which handles the CET figures.

When you first go to that site then by default, it will give you a graph which shows the England and Wales rainfall figures during the current month. You will notice that there are buttons across both the top and right hand sides of that chart which allows you to get that data for past years and on other months. More importantly though in this regard, there are other buttons on the left hand side of that chart which allows you to select a different region, so you can choose a specific region with that default England and Wales area, choose the whole of Scotland, the whole of Northern Ireland, or a specific region within Scotland. Below those buttons is a link to a map of the various regions and from that, I can see that Edinburgh lies within the Eastern Scotland Region (as well as within Scotland itself, of course).

When you choose different regions for this month, what you will notice is that just about every single region is running wetter than average during this month so far, but with just one exception. Even Scotland as a whole is running wetter than average overall according to that chart, though much closer to average than elsewhere as is the case with Northern Ireland.

Within Scotland itself, the wettest region is shown to be the south of Scotland which in these regions, is really that part of Scotland which lies to the south of Edinburgh, mostly consisting of the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway as well as the southern part of the west of Scotland, including Glasgow. Even the north of Scotland is shown to be slightly wetter than average according to that chart which shows that what is actually going on, can't simply just be put down to a southerly tracking jet stream. Indeed, the only place on that chart which is not running wetter than average on that chart is that East of Scotland region which includes Edinburgh and whilst the rainfall figures for here in Edinburgh itself are running at around average as you will have seen from my reports on this thread so far, the East of Scotland region as a whole is actually running a bit drier than average on that chart.

I have mentioned the rainfall gap between here and the rest of the UK quite a lot on this forum and this chart highlights this really well because this shows why the rainfall figures which I am reporting are much lower than what everyone else is reporting since I am the only person from within that East of Scotland area which has been regularly reporting anything on this thread and if we were getting the local figures from others within this same East of Scotland region such as Richard from Aberdeen or doctormog, their figures probably would be on a par with, or even less than the figures which I am reporting.

A total of just 0.2 mm of rain was recorded for yesterday in the end at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with just 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh with that probably being due to condensation in both cases rather than any actual rainfall.

However, today has been completely dry so far at both of those stations as at 8am this morning.

That then takes this month's total so far as at 8am this morning today to just 17.4 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and just 17.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In the end, a total of 4.4 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 4.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a further 4.6 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 3.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 26.4 mm, the total for this winter so far to 26.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 604.8 mm as at 8am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes this month's total so far to 24.4 mm, the total for this winter so far to 24.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 587.8 mm as at 8am this morning.

In complete contrast to what is happening in the rest of the UK, this month is actually running slightly drier than average here just now, largely thanks to the dry spell which was brought to an end during yesterday by Storm Deirdre, and which lasted for 4 days at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 3 days at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Since the general outlook in the run up to Christmas and possibly beyond is more unsettled though according to the latest model output, this month might not be running drier than average here for long.
