Drove to Cheesefoot Head after the cold, cold rain arrived. 3C at river level. 2C E of Winchester. 1C at the Science Centre and fully expected a zero and snow at the top- but forgot that this warm sector was going to lift over the cold. Still 1C at the Head and not a fleck of sleet or ice in the rain. Warmer higher, and no freeze once the water fell into the +1C moist air. Windy too- plenty of time for melt even if there had been colder air aloft.

We had ice pellets for the best part of an hour here, mixed in with cold rain.  Thoroughly unpleasant.

I was going to post today about the activities of weather events dinner time ish! s/e wind rain light for a time (very strong wind gust). winds now wnw and all rain one or two bits of sleet. I suppose on to the next cold outcome?

Beautiful 6cm snow blanket over everything. No tracks on roads. Unfortunately, probably will be gone in the morning.

Should've got up earlier? My wife's carer saw a few flakes of snow for a few mniutes when she started out on her rounds at 7am even at 10m asl in Chichester. Only saw rain, myself

WF incursion I’m afraid - cold surface, milder mid level and sub zero at ppn later. Works when the air in situ is cold enough but not this time. At Hindhead at 10am it was the same temp (4C) as Petersfield and that says it all. I’m not certain but it looks like the ‘big freezing rain event’ didn’t cause too many issues. If you’d be listening to Heart FM yesterday morning down here you’d think a national emergency was underway.

So in the end we had 5-6 hours of freezing rain. This was in line with Met Office predictions. The text and warning forecasts always highlighted that freezing rain would be the main feature not snow. The automated forecast showed heavy snow above 100m or so. Goes to show why you need that human assessment sometimes.

Was an amber warning justified? Not sure , it was certainly icy, the power flickered . Roads and pavements were icy in places but not completely glazed here, although i only can speak for my street. I think also below 150m the temp was just above freezing for most of day though so for most there will have been far less ice. We were sub zero until the evening .

The strangest thing was the cracking noise of the ice covered trees as the wind roared through them.
