I've only had 2 C max here in the shadow of Blackford Hill, John. The frost has persisted all day. I am in complete shadow here from early December to mid - January. No sun can be recorded for about 5 weeks due to Blackford Hill immediately to my south

This makes today, our second sunniest day of both this month and this winter so far and although we haven't quite reached the halfway point of this month so far, that also means that we need a total of at least 13.2 hours of sunshine between now and the end of this month, in order for this month to go down as being sunnier than average overall with that accolade having already been clinched for this entire year before we even went into this month.

Today's maximum temperature was 4.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 4°C at Edinburgh Airport and 3.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, so today was the coldest day of both this month and this winter so far at all three of my local stations. However, today still hasn't been all that cold for this time of year at any of those stations, especially when you consider that it was around this time last year that we had our first official ice day of last winter.

Nevertheless, the temperatures are already dropping away nicely under those clear skies and so, the temperature at 4pm this afternoon was already down to 0.1°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 1°C at Edinburgh Airport and 1.6°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

As early as 4pm this afternoon, we were very close to recording an official air frost at Edinburgh Gogarbank but then, the breeze picked up, the temperature jumped back up and during this cold spell so far, we still haven't even had a single official air frost at any of my three local stations.

Although the skies are still fairly clear just now, the temperatures are refusing to drop because the wind just keeps on picking up every time that the temperature approaches freezing and now, this cold spell is in grave danger of ending tomorrow without even a single official air frost being recorded in this neck of the woods which at this time of the year, is just really abysmal because that then means that if you can't even get an air frost during a winter cold spell, when on Earth can you get one?

Anyway, the temperature at 8pm this evening was 2.2°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, 2°C at Edinburgh Airport and 0.8°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.
